In the third-place game of the Southern Methodist women’s basketball tournament:

UC Irvine 86, Prairie View A&M; 28--Winning by the third-widest margin in school history, the Anteaters recorded their first victory of the season after two losses.

The 58-point margin was the largest since a school record 107-22 victory over UC Santa Cruz in the 1978-79 season opener. The 86 points were the most in a regulation game since a 97-57 victory over San Jose State on Feb. 25, 1988. (Irvine scored 93 in an overtime victory over New Mexico State Jan. 19.)

Guard Kathy Lizarraga led all scorers with 14 points; center Beth Beers added 12 and forward Yvonne Catala 10. No Prairie View A&M; player had more than seven as the Panthers made only 12 of 47 shots (25.9%).

The Anteaters scored 43 points in each half and led, 43-11, at halftime.

In the seventh-place game of the Western New Mexico women’s basketball tournament:

Southern California College 90, Howard Payne 84--Kristen Bevis scored a game-high 22 points, and Cindi Lyons and Jamie Zitterkopf 21 each as the Vanguards improved to 2-3.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Christ College Irvine 96, Dominican College 19--Gitte Mejer had 26 points for Christ College Irvine as they hammered host Dominican College. Stacy Kirch had five three-pointers and 19 points for CCI (1-1).

Erin Pope led Dominican (0-3) with 16.
