The Centurions have the talent and experience to win their first league game in school history this season. Watts, who has a 129-75 career coaching record including his years at Santa Ana, expects to have a good defensive team. “Our lack of size could be a big problem, but overall, defense will be our strength,” Watts said. On offense, Century will be led by Guerrero, who averaged 11 points last season and was a second team all-league choice. Also returning is Mendoza, an honorable mention all-league selection last season in the Centurions’ first season of varsity competition. “The year of varsity experience for the team will help, and the addition of Alexander to take some of the pressure off of Mendoza in bringing up the ball will really help,” Watts said. Martinez adds depth in the backcourt, while Zepeda will switch between guard and forward. Zepeda averaged six points as a freshman last year. Vallejo and Gallardo will battle the league’s post players inside. Watts says Costa Mesa has the league’s best talent, but he also expects Estancia to be in the running. The championship race isn’t Century’s primary concern, however. “First off, we want to win our first league game, and then we’ll try to finish in the top three,” Watts said.
