PREP BASKETBALL ‘91-’92 PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE : Laguna Beach

OUTLOOK

A team that finished 4-15 the previous season and doesn’t have a player over 5 feet 8 on the roster usually doesn’t look forward to the Southern Section playoffs, but Laguna Beach has good reason to think about postseason play in 1992. The Artists, with an enrollment of only 650, will get to face schools their own size in the enrollment-based playoffs, instead of the 1,000-plus enrollment schools that make up the rest of the league. Laguna Beach will rely on Klempen, a four-year starter, to direct the offense, and the experience of returning starters Stephens, Olney and Waian. The rest of the Artist lineup is made up of newcomers. “The team is very young, but we have the potential to be competitive behind Nikki’s leadership,” Olney said. The Artists will need additional scoring from their experienced players, as Stephens is the top returning scorer after averaging seven points last season. Without a true center, Laguna Beach will need strong rebounding from the players in the 5-8 range, including Stephens, O’Connell and Towner. Olney hopes the strength of the league and experience against teams like Costa Mesa and Estancia will prepare the Artists for the playoffs.
