Swim Teams From CSUN Face Challenge
The swimming teams from Cal State Northridge will take a combined 10-2 record into the highly competitive National Grand Prix meet today through Saturday at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach.
The women are 6-1 after wins over UC Santa Cruz, Cal State Sacramento, Pepperdine, UC San Diego, Pacific and the University of San Diego.
California, one of the top teams in the nation, handed the Northridge women their only defeat, 93-20.
The men’s team is 4-1, which includes victories over Santa Cruz, Sacramento and UC San Diego and a forfeit win over Pacific.
Cal defeated Northridge, 207-69.
USC is the host of the Grand Prix, which draws teams from the Pacific 10, Big West and Pacific Collegiate conferences.
John Kunishima, Northridge’s record-holder in four individual events (50- and 100-meter freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 individual medley) could make his comeback in the Grand Prix meet.
Kunishima, a senior, has not competed the past three weeks because of an inflamed shoulder.
Freshman diver Tyrone Thompson remains sidelined because of a broken bone in his left hand.
