OUTLOOK

The Eagles are smaller but quicker this season. It’s a change Holmes likes. “I think we’re going to be a lot more exciting to watch this season,” he said. Santa Margarita has two quality players back in Bathey and Carpenter. Bathey, who will play more at forward this season, has played on the varsity since he was a freshman and has been the team’s leading scorer the previous three seasons. As a junior, he averaged 19.5 points. Carpenter, who averaged 14.3 points last season, is an excellent outside shooter. He made 52% of his three-point attempts in 1990-91. However, the Eagles’ success will depend on the development of the newcomers. Lewis and Nolan are the best of the group. Although he weighs only 185 pounds, Lewis is a strong inside player and is being counted on to score in the paint. “We’re looking for him to do a lot of our rebounding,” Holmes said. Nolan is a scorer who will try to take the pressure off Bathey and Carpenter. “Bobby is extremely quick and runs the court real well,” Holmes said. “And we’re going to run a lot more.” But the Eagles’ lack of experience will hurt them in this league.
