McCabe, who coached the Diamond Bar girls’ varsity for four seasons, replaces Chris Burton at Fullerton. Burton resigned after three seasons to accept a similar position at Villa Park. McCabe, 32, a graduate of Cal State Fullerton, led Diamond Bar to a 63-40 record and four playoff appearances. The difference between coaching boys and girls? “The boys are a little bigger and a little faster, and the girls are a little more responsible,” McCabe said. “Also, if you get a 20-point lead at halftime in a girls’ game, it’s over. The other night, I had a 20-point lead at halftime against Garden Grove and I never felt comfortable.” McCabe will be using a man-to-man defense and 10 players with good shooting ability. There are no returning starters, but lettermen Garza and Brookman have some varsity experience and brothers Jason and Gabe Viramontes are steady in the backcourt. Garza had 20 points in the season opener and Brookman added 16 points. Jason is the team’s point guard. McCabe has kept 30 players on the sophomore team, saying, “It’s important for every player to know that he’s welcome in this program.”
