The Dana Hills girls’ soccer team upset El Toro, 2-0, Monday in the second round of the Irvine tournament, ending the Chargers’ unbeaten string at 42 matches.

El Toro (3-1) last lost in 1990 to Dana Hills in a South Coast League match and had since won consecutive Southern Section Division 4-A titles. Dana Hills and Mission Viejo each tied the Chargers in league play last season.

Monday, Dana Hills (2-1) struck early when Amy Kroeger scored off an assist by Diane Divino 10 minutes into the match. Divino scored the other goal off an assist by Lori Bowers 15 minutes into the second half.

In another Irvine girls’ soccer tournament match:

Trabuco Hills 1, Laguna Hills 0--Kristen Lowery scored for Trabuco Hills (3-0) on a pass from Theresa Summa that split Laguna Hill’s defense. Goalkeeper Shannon Pickett had six saves and recorded her third consecutive shutout.

In Ocean View Tournament of Champions boys’ basketball:

Mater Dei 85, Long Beach Millikan 38--The Monarchs shut out Millikan for four minutes in the second quarter and allowed only 11 points in the second and third quarters for a victory in the first round of the Tournament of Champions at Ocean View High School.

Mater Dei has allowed an average of only 43.2 points and has won its first five games by an average margin of 32.8 points.

Coach Gary McKnight benched his starters midway through the first quarter for what he later termed “a lack of defensive intensity” and five reserves showed they were more than capable of winning.

Sophomore Miles Simon, who is quickly becoming a crowd favorite with his three-point shooting, led all scorers with 19 points. Simon made three of four three-point attempts.

“When he winds up to shoot, the crowd gets quiet,” McKnight said. “He’s a great shooter. I just hope the starters got the message tonight. They were lackadaisical, so I sat them down.”
