Coach Gary McKnight benched his starters midway through the first quarter for what he later termed “a lack of defensive intensity” and five reserves showed they were more than capable of winning.

Sophomore Miles Simon, who is quickly becoming a crowd favorite with his three-point shooting, led all scorers with 19 points. Simon made three of four three-point attempts.

“When he winds up to shoot, the crowd gets quiet,” McKnight said. “He’s a great shooter. I just hope the starters got the message tonight. They were lackadaisical, so I sat them down.”

Los Alamitos 59, Long Beach Poly 56--Steve Carbone led a fourth-quarter rally with two three-point shots that helped Los Alamitos (2-3) snap a three-game losing streak. Carbone’s three-pointer with 2:45 remaining gave Los Alamitos its first lead of the second half, 50-48. He finished with 20 points.
