OUTLOOK

Byars hopes to channel some of the energy left over from last season, when the Colonists reached the second round of the playoffs in their first winning season since 1969-70. But this season’s team has a whole new look. The Colonists lost four starters to graduation and the fifth starter, all-league point guard Say Iemsisinath, left school this fall for personal reasons. Anaheim was 12-8 during summer league play with Iemsisinath in the lineup, but “he’s gone now, so we have to throw all that out,” Byars said. Saphanthang and Malapha probably will share the vacant point-guard duties. Besides lack of experience, the Colonists also lack height. And rebounding is a concern for Byars. “This is the smallest team I’ve had in my eight years here,” he said. But Byars also has seen some promise in practice. “I like our players,” he said. “I think we can develop into a good team. We’re young and inexperienced, but our kids like to play.”
