Edison was sporadic in the Coca-Cola Classic at Trabuco Hills, but Borchert insists the Chargers will be a very good team by mid-January. “Kyle Murphy and John Khamis were both starters on the football team, so it will take some time for this team to blend together,” Borchert said. “Both offensively and defensively, this team will be built around Brandon Jessie. But we also have many other fine players.” Jessie began his fourth season on the varsity with a less-than-imposing debut against Trabuco Hills, scoring only 10 points and sulking when he was assessed his fourth foul in the third quarter. But Jessie came back to score 73 points in his next three games. “He’s the best player in the state who hasn’t signed yet,” one college scout said. Serafin was the most valuable player on the Chargers’ junior varsity team last year, and Murphy moves up from the sophomore team. Williams, the biggest player on the team, started as a freshman on the junior varsity team three years ago but did not play basketball the past two seasons. Khamis, Murphy and Williams, three wide-body athletes, will give Edison a strong inside game. Edison is the top-seeded team in the Irvine World News Tournament, which begins Tuesday.
