Faith Baptist High’s basketball team received a boost last week with the return of off-guard Darren Wyre, who broke his right arm during football season.

Wyre started on the school’s Southern Section 1-A Division championship basketball team two seasons ago. Despite consistent pain, he gave the Contenders (5-3) another offensive option on his return.

Last Saturday, Wyre scored 22 points in an 88-70 victory over Oxnard in a consolation game of the Thousand Oaks tournament. Wyre, who is playing with a metal plate in his heavily bandaged arm, was making his first start.

“He’s getting much, much closer to form,” Coach Stuart Mason said.

Wyre’s presence could give Faith Baptist a legitimate shot at the championship of the always-competitive Delphic League. Starting alongside Wyre in the backcourt is Alex (Loafie) Estrada, a preseason all-state selection at the Division V level. Center Peter Rasmussen (6-foot-8) and forward Etienne Moore (6-5) give the team size inside. All four are seniors.

Moore has 147 rebounds in eight games (18.4) and averaged 19 points in the Thousand Oaks tournament. Estrada had back-to-back 12-assist performances in the Contenders’ final two tournament games and averaged 18.8 points.

Some would maintain that Faith Baptist is just a big fish in a small pond. Playing against much larger schools in the tournament, however, Faith Baptist finished 2-2 and lost its two games by a total of six points.

Scoring: Crespi Coach Chris Nikchevich has high praise for his team’s leading scorer, off-guard Rob Leff.

“He’s not just a shooter,” Nikchevich said. “He’s a scorer.”

Leff, once a perimeter gunner, has developed into a player capable of creating his own shots. Leff scored a game-high 36 points to lead the Celts to an 83-66 victory over Buena on Saturday, marking the third consecutive victory for Crespi. Leff, a senior, is averaging 21.9 points. . . .

Hoover guard Dave Ulloa has been on fire from three-point range. Ulloa, a senior guard averaging a team-high 24 points after five games, has made 11 of his last 14 three-point attempts (78.6%). Ulloa made five of six three-point shots in a 64-63 loss to Burroughs and six of eight in a 78-76 win over Burbank. . . .

Crescenta Valley’s Josh Willis is averaging a team-high 25.8 points in seven games and has made 10 of 22 (45.4%) three-point shots. Willis, a 6-6 senior guard, scored a season-high 29 points against Antelope Valley. . . .

Hart’s Ali Peek is averaging 21.9 points after eight games and is shooting 72.2% from the field. Glendale forward Mike Wright is averaging 19.1 points after eight games.

North Hollywood sophomore forward Damon Ollie is the only Huskie player to have scored in double figures in each of North Hollywood’s seven games. Ollie is averaging 14.7 points. His high is 19 against Fremont.

Defense: Moorpark’s Richard Hernandez has made 29 steals in eight games, an average of 3.6 per game. “He can pickpocket a guy while he’s dribbling,” Moorpark Coach Tim Bednar said.

Rebounding: In Canyon’s first seven games, senior forward Joe Ferguson has had rebounding totals of 13 vs. Westlake; 10 vs. Saugus; 11 vs. Hart; 18 vs. Hart; 12 vs. Sunny Hills; 15 vs. Mission Viejo, and 14 vs. El Toro for an average of 13.2 a game.

Records: Senior guard Tim Sebek will leave Nordhoff as the most prolific basketball player in school history. After four games this season, he leads the school in career totals in points scored (1,211); rebounds (757); field goals (399); free throws (309), and three-point baskets (104). His total of 391 assists ranks second to Rob Fournier’s 405.
