Jessie, one of the top players in the county, led Edison to the championship of the Irvine World News Tournament and earned tournament most valuable player honors. Jessie had 23 points and nine rebounds in the Chargers’ 55-39 victory over Woodbridge in the finals Saturday. He also scored more than 25 points per game for the tournament, but Edison Coach Jon Borchert said Jessie wasn’t close to showing his best. “Brandon wasn’t sharp (Saturday) night,” Borchert said. “A year ago when he wasn’t sharp, he’d only score 10 points. Now when he isn’t sharp, he scores 23. There’s just a different level to his play. He’s going to have some great nights this year.” Borchert is also happy with Jessie’s leadership as one of the tri-captains this season. “He’s extremely unselfish,” Borchert said. “In fact, I wish he would shoot more. When you have a guy shooting 54% or 55%, percent, you want that person to get as many shots as possible. He’s the best player I have ever coached.”

Other top performers:

Angel Barrios, who scored 24 points in Buena Park’s 58-57 overtime victory over Saddleback in the Fullerton tournament championship game. Barrios was named tournament MVP and led Buena Park to its first tournament title in 10 years.

Mike Carpenter, who earned MVP honors at the Arroyo Grande tournament for Santa Margarita. Carpenter scored 30 points in a semifinal victory and had 16 points in the Eagles’ 67-64 victory over Arroyo Grande in the final.
