GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Bishop Montgomery Runs to Victory Over Marina

Pushing its up-tempo offense to full speed, Bishop Montgomery defeated Marina, 63-51, in the championship game of the Marina girls’ basketball tournament Monday night.

The Knights (9-1) outscored and outhustled Marina (11-2), the third-ranked team in Orange County, turning a 15-15 tie after a quarter and 28-22 game at the half into a rout.

Bishop Montgomery led by as many as 20 (49-29) early in the fourth quarter before the Vikings rallied to make the final score somewhat respectable.

Sophomore guard Shelley Dungo led the Knights with 20 points and forward Keisa Smith had 12 rebounds.

Center Jessica Trippet and guard Aimee Periolat, both of whom made the all-tournament team, each scored 14 points for Marina. Trippet also had 12 rebounds.

Bishop Montgomery senior guard Mirlen Martinez, who scored nine points and had nine rebounds Monday, was selected the tournament’s most valuable player.
