Loyola Women Are Beaten by Nebraska, 85-54

The Nebraska women’s basketball team used a full-court press to force Loyola Marymount into 28 turnovers in an 85-54 victory Thursday night at Gersten Pavilion.

Karen Jennings, who was named the Big Eight Conference player of the week on Monday, led the Cornhuskers with 28 points on 13-for-17 shooting. Sue Hesch added 15 points and seven rebounds. Nebraska (9-3) led 45-19 at halftime.

The Lions (5-6) were led by Joelle Longobardi and guard Nicki Rouillard. Each scored 15 points. Longobardi has now scored in double figures in 21 of the past 22 games.

Loyola will play host to San Diego State at 3 p.m. Sunday. San Diego, which plays UCLA tonight, is 6-3.

The Aztecs are led by 6-foot-3 center Kieishsha Garnes and 6-3 forward Michelle Suman.

Garnes, a preseason All-American, is averaging 20 points and 8.1 rebounds. Suman averages 13.6 points and 8.1 rebounds, and guard Falisha Wright averages 12.3 points and five rebounds.

Loyola lost to UC Santa Barbara, 70-38, Monday in Goleta.

On Thursday, Loyola will travel to Cal State Northridge for a 4:45 p.m. game. Northridge, competing in its second season in the NCAA Division I, is 0-15 entering Saturday’s game against Nebraska.

The game against Northridge will be the final nonconference game for the Lions, who open West Coast Conference play Jan. 16 at Portland.

Registration for the Redondo Beach Sunset Youth Baseball & Softball League will start Jan. 11 at Alta Vista Park in Redondo Beach.

Players may register from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 11 and 18 and from noon to 4 p.m. Jan. 12 and 19.

There will be baseball for boys age 7 to 16, softball for girls 7 to 14 and T-Ball for boys and girls 5 and 6.

The cost is $45 for T-Ball and $65 for baseball and softball.

Loyola Marymount players and coaches will hold a free baseball clinic from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 11 at George Page Stadium.

The clinic is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 16.

The fourth annual Loyola Marymount Bullpen Club Golf Classic will be held at noon Jan. 20 at the Via Verde Country Club, 1400 Avenida Entrada, San Dimas.

The classic will benefit the Loyola baseball team. Cost is $150 and includes green fees, cart rental, lunch and dinner. Cost for dinner only is $40.

The Inglewood Recreation and Community Services Department is sponsoring its 18th annual Maurice McClanahan Invitational, a men’s adult basketball tournament, Jan. 13 in Inglewood.

The entry fee is $40 per team. The deadline is Thursday.

Registration has also started for league play, which starts Jan. 20. Entry fee is $100 a team. The deadline is Jan. 16.
