THOUSAND OAKS : Man Shot Trying to Stop Argument

A Thousand Oaks man who intervened in an argument between a friend and her spurned lover got a bullet in the stomach for his gallantry, Ventura County sheriffs detectives said.

Michael Roberts, 29, was listed in fair condition at Los Robles Regional Medical Center Monday night after surgery on a wound to his abdomen and hip, authorities said.

Joel M. Guinn, 28, of Thousand Oaks was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The shooting occurred about 1 p.m. at a house that Guinn shared until last week with Alicia O’Neill, said Detective Mike Powers.

Powers said Guinn had moved out of the house last week but kept returning under the pretext of having left belongings behind.

Roberts “was just a friend who was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Powers said.

Shortly after Guinn confronted O’Neill at the house Monday afternoon, Roberts showed up and jumped in on O’Neill’s behalf, Powers said. Guinn then allegedly pulled out a medium-caliber pistol and fired a single shot at Roberts.
