School: Newport Harbor

Sport: Basketball

Position: Forward

Class: Junior

Ross was a first-team All-Sea View League selection as a sophomore but Newport Harbor Coach Shannon Jakosky said Ross’ play in the early part of this season was mediocre. That changed last week when Ross averaged 21 points, eight steals and five rebounds as the Sailors (7-4) won three games in the Santiago tournament. “We’ve been working really hard on our pressure defense, and we’ve been causing people to make some bad passes and Michaela is good at anticipating and stepping into the passing lane,” Jakosky said. “I was pleased in that she played three good solid games--defensively as well as offensively.” In the championship game Saturday, Ross scored 22 points in Newport Harbor’s 50-34 victory over El Modena. The victory extended the Sailors’ winning streak to five games.

Other top performers:

Jody Anton, who scored 23 points as Brea-Olinda defeated Costa Mesa 74-45 in a nonleague basketball game.

Alisa Farr, who was named most valuable player of the Costa Mesa tournament after scoring 12 points in Capistrano Valley’s 65-46 victory over San Clemente in the title game. Farr also had five points, six assists and eight steals in a 51-34 nonleague victory over Mater Dei.
