GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Marina Is Victim of Huntington Beach’s Second Straight Upset

Huntington Beach completed its second consecutive victory over a ranked team, beating Marina, 49-45, in a Sunset League girls’ basketball game Thursday at Huntington Beach.

Huntington Beach (8-6, 2-0) had started Sunset League play with a victory over fourth-ranked Ocean View, 65-57. Marina (12-3, 1-1) is ranked third.

Huntington Beach took advantage of a poor-shooting Marina team to open a 33-14 lead at the half. Marina made six of 38 shots from the field in the first half.

Clare Walker scored 20 and Tuesda Wistrick added 16 for Huntington Beach. Wistrick had 14 rebounds and Walker 11. Deana Itow scored seven points and had 11 assists for Huntington Beach.

Marina rallied to get as close as three points late but Walker’s basket with a minute left put the game away for Huntington Beach.

In other Sunset League games:

Fountain Valley 61, Westminster 41--Five-foot-two guard Salipa Shah scored 16 points, including two three-pointers, for Fountain Valley (7-8, 1-1) in a Sunset League game. Center Julie Jurdent, who led in rebounds with 12, was second-highest scorer with 12 points.

Ocean View 64, Edison 50--Kristy Bell scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds for the Seahawks (10-4, 1-1) at Ocean View. Tricia Lindquist added 16 points for Ocean View.

In the Angelus League:

Santa Margarita 48, Rosary 46--Tara Moss scored 16 points and Leslie Nolan added 10 for Santa Margarita (10-6, 1-0) in the league opener at home.

In the Century League:

Canyon 53, Villa Park 29--Rona Rathod scored 14 points and Lisa Petronis 10 as the Comanches improved to 6-6, 1-0.

Erin Waggoner had 11 assists and six steals for Canyon.

Santa Ana Valley 41, Orange 22--Marie Pulu had 13 rebounds for Santa Ana Valley (7-6, 1-0) and Susie Guerrero added nine steals for the Falcons at home.

El Modena 64, Foothill 20--Kathy Farina had 23 points and teammate Melizza Benitez had 21 as El Modena opened play in the Century League with a win. El Modena is 5-5.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 59, Sunny Hills 21Marinela Misa scored 22 points and Ashley Jones added 11 as visiting Fullerton (10-4, 1-0) won the league opener. Fullerton led, 15-6, after one quarter and then outscored Sunny Hills, 22-1, in the second quarter for a 37-7 lead.

La Habra 55, Sonora 44--Martha Hernandez scored 18 points and Zrinka Kristich added 16 for La Habra (6-5, 1-0) in the league opener at Sonora (5-8, 0-1). Chris Nonis scored 19 points, including five three-pointers, for Sonora.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 35, Century 30--Jennifer Arzola scored 11 points and Romy Christensen added 10 for Laguna Hills (7-4, 1-0) in the league opener at Century (10-4, 0-1). Amy Feinello led Laguna Hills with 12 rebounds, and Laura Zepeda led Century with 15 points. In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 51, Alaya 26--Senior Becky Cole scored 14 points for visiting Orange Lutheran (6-5, 1-0). Cole is the sister of former Orange Lutheran standout Daryl Cole, who is playing at Rancho Santiago College.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 50, Mission Viejo 24--Forward Stacy Howes scored 11 points for Capistrano Valley in the league opener for both teams. Sisters Susan Scott and Katie Scott were both strong on rebounds, with Susan grabbing nine and Katie seven. Capistrano Valley is 14-1, 1-0, and Mission Viejo is 7-6, 0-1.

San Clemente 51, Dana Hills 45--Dana Netherby scored 19 points for host San Clemente (9-4, 1-0).

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Heritage Christian 37, La Verne Calvary Baptist 23--Jackie Dixon scored eight of her 12 points in the fourth quarter as the Patriots (3-4) outscored the Cougars, 17-0, in the final eight minutes.

Cerritos Whitney 52, Capistrano Valley Christian 47--Heidi Elliott had 16 points and 13 rebounds for Capistrano Valley Christian (4-7).
