GIRLS’ SOCCER ROUNDUP : Two Second-Half Goals Pace No. 3 Mater Dei

Amber Escobedo and Kim Donohue scored second-half goals as host Mater Dei, ranked third in the Southern Section’s 4-A Division, defeated Lakewood St. Joseph, 2-0, in an Angelus League game Thursday.

Goalie Becky Thomas didn’t make a save but recorded her seventh shutout of the season.The Monarchs improved to 13-1-1, 1-0 in league.

In another Angelus League game:

Rosary 3, Santa Margarita 2--Carrie Hurst of Rosary (7-2-3) broke a 2-2 tie with a second-half goal. Goalie Helen Baron had 11 saves for Rosary.

In the Century League:

Canyon 4, Orange 0--Kim Campbell scored the first two goals in a Century League match. Ingrid Anderson and Krista Broughton also scored for Canyon (9-4-1).

Villa Park 2, Foothill 2--Kari Maeda scored in the second half to give host Foothill (1-8-1, 0-0-1) a tie. Vicky Lara also scored for Foothill. Marsha Obledja and Meghan Reppe scored for Villa Park (5-5-1, 0-0-1).

In Empire League girls’ soccer:

Los Alamitos 1, El Dorado 0--Brandie Hayungs scored with eight minutes left and Kathy Skoglund had five saves for the visiting Griffins (6-3-3, 1-0).

In Freeway League girls’ soccer:

Fullerton 8, Buena Park 0--Sisters Deborah and Kristin Hargrave each had two goals and two assists as Fullerton (3-6-3, 1-0) won at Buena Park. Fullerton led, 3-0, at the half.

Sunny Hills 3, Sonora 1--Rhonda Partida scored two goals for the Warriors (10-1-0, 1-0) in a Freeway League opener at Sonora. Jamie Gardiner also scored for Sunny Hills. Sonora is 4-3-4, 0-1.

In Olympic League girls’ soccer:

Chino Ayala 3, Orange Lutheran 1--Charlotte Johnson scored for the host Lancers (3-4, 0-1) in a losing effort.

In South Coast League:

El Toro 2, Irvine 0--Denise Kenyon and Kim Henry each scored a goal for El Toro (14-2, 1-0) in the league opener at Irvine (10-3-2).

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Edison 6, Newport Harbor 0--Janell Martin had three goals for Edison (8-4-4) in a nonleague match. Erin Bailey, Nicole Catanzaro and Christine Tyler had one goal apiece.

Saddleback 1, Century 0--Lupe Estrada made three saves in her varsity debut and Diane Held scored 23 minutes into the game as the host Roadrunners won their second consecutive game after beginning the season with eight losses.

Westminster 3, Savanna 0--Freshman center-forward Stephanie Wilson scored twice in the first half and Kristen Zapalac made 14 saves for her second shutout as the host Lions improved to 4-3.
