Dominguez Hills Tries for Second League Win

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball team plays host to Cal Poly Pomona in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game at 7:30 tonight.

Pomona (9-6 overall, 1-1 in league play) ranks among the conference scoring leaders with an average of 82 points a game. Dominguez Hills (9-6, 1-1) has allowed only 64.4 points.

Dominguez Hills lost to UC Riverside, 74-62, and defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 63-58, in conference games last week.

The Toros have been led by guard Chris Thompson, a freshman from Artesia High who is averaging 10.9 points. She also leads the team with 34 assists. Senior forward Michael Moore is averaging 9.7 points and 3.7 rebounds.

Pomona has two of the top guards in the conference in seniors Andre Harrell and Chancellor McCobb. McCobb is averaging 14.9 points and 3.5 assists and Harrell 13.6 points and 3.5 assists.

McCobb scored 27 points and Harrell added 26 in Pomona’s 112-101 upset victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last week.

Dominguez Hills and Pomona split two games last season.

On Saturday, Dominguez Hills will travel to Cal State Los Angeles (6-9, 0-2) for an 8:05 p.m. game.

The Golden Eagles, who lost conference games to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Cal State Bakersfield last week, are led by junior guards Derek Knowles and Etienne Graves. Knowles averages 14.8 points and Graves 10.9.

The Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team will try to remain undefeated in CCAA play when it visits UC Riverside at 7:30 tonight.

Dominguez Hills is 10-7 overall and 2-0 in conference play and Riverside is 3-11 and 1-1.

The Toros, who are tied for first in the CCAA with 10-time defending champion Cal Poly Pomona, defeated Cal State Los Angeles, 69-55, and Cal State San Bernardino, 57-49 in overtime, in conference games last week.

Leading the way was senior forward Cheri Bullet, who had two-game totals of 44 points and 18 rebounds. She leads the Toros with an average of 15.4 points and 9.9 rebounds.

Two other players averaging in double figures for the Toros are junior center Dionne Vanlandingham at 10.7 points and sophomore guard Karee Bonde at 10.3.

Riverside, which went 1-1 against Dominguez Hills last season, defeated San Bernardino, 54-45, but lost to Pomona, 71-41, in conference games last week.

The Highlanders are led by junior center Rachel Rosario, who averages 14.4 points and 11.7 rebounds, and junior guard Chris Mendoza, who averages 14.2 points and 7.9 rebounds.

Registration is under way for the Manhattan Beach Recreation Department’s youth basketball program that starts Thursday at Manhattan Beach Intermediate School.

Youths in grades seven and eight are eligible and there is no charge. Parental consent is required to participate.

The Gardena Recreation and Human Services Department is seeking referees for its 1992 youth basketball season.

Officials will receive $10 a game.

Prospective officials must attend certification meetings Wednesday, Thursday and Jan. 29 at the Nakaoka Community Center, 1700 W. 162nd St., Gardena.

The Redondo Beach Sunset Youth Baseball & Softball League is holding registration for its girls’ softball, boys’ baseball and co-ed T-ball programs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Alta Vista Park in Redondo Beach.

Softball is for ages 7 to 14, baseball for ages 7 to 16 and T-ball for ages 5 and 6.

The cost is $45 for T-Ball or $65 for baseball or softball.
