ROUNDUP : CSUN Duo Set School Marks for Freshmen

Fielding teams for the first time in an indoor track season, Cal State Northridge received several strong performances Saturday at the Nevada Reno Invitational at the Livestock Event Center in Reno.

Two CSUN freshman school records were set in the meet and two Matador athletes placed first in their events.

Tyrone Gayles set a freshman record in the hammer throw with a toss of 49-3. He finished fifth. Derek Scurry placed fourth in the men’s long jump with a mark of 24 feet 5 inches, a CSUN freshman indoor record. Mike Smith of CSUN won the men’s 800-meter run in 1 minute 54.52 seconds, breaking his personal-best indoor mark by five seconds. Kim Young won the women’s 55-meter hurdles in 8.18 seconds.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Lutheran 78, Occidental 75--With the score tied, 75-75, Jeff deLaveaga (37 points) scored on a baseline drive with three seconds left, was fouled and made the foul shot to give visiting Cal Lutheran (6-8, 2-0) a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.

The Master’s 88, Christian Heritage 64--Jason Webster scored 23 points on the road to lead the Mustangs (13-7, 5-0) to an NAIA District 3 victory. It was Master’s sixth win in a row.

Moorpark 82, West L.A. 56--Damian Wilson scored a game-high 25 points and tied for game-high honors with 12 rebounds to lead host Moorpark in a nonconference game.

Canyons 69, Santa Barbara 61--Forward Reggie Bell scored a game-high 20 points for visiting Canyons (15-5) in a nonconference game. Teammate David Langley added 17 points and had six assists.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 58, Mills 44--Deborah Prociw scored a game-high 19 points for the host Mustangs (3-14).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Montclair Prep 80, Maranatha 63--Despite collecting three fouls in the first half, Kris Johnson scored a season-high 31 points for visiting Montclair Prep (15-1, 2-0) in an Alpha League game. The Mounties’ Jared Sonne scored 13 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter.

Faith Baptist 93, Bel-Air Prep 70--Darren Wyre (19 points) made five of eight shots from three-point range--including four in the first quarter--to spark Faith Baptist (12-5, 3-1) in a Delphic League game at Murphy High.

L.A. Lutheran 59, Pilgrim 53--Greg Norlie scored 16 points, had 10 rebounds and three blocked shots to lead host L. A. Lutheran (11-3, 5-0) in a Heritage League game.

Thacher 67, Villanova 55--Senior guard Marcus Stokes scored 10 of his game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter the host Toads (4-1, 2-0) in a Condor League game.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Thousand Oaks 62, Newbury Park 30--The Lancers (15-1) stretched their winning streak to nine with a Marmonte League rout over visiting Newbury Park.

Michelle Palmisano scored a game-high 34 points.

Buena 68, Morningside 50--The Bulldogs (12-1) beat the four-time defending Southern Section champion Monarchs (6-9) in a nonleague game at Buena.

Buena, which led, 26-11, after one quarter, was led by Mikko Giordano with 13 points.

St. Genevieve 74, Littlerock 28--Alberta Muller scored 13 points and Donna Patterson had 12 for St. Genevieve (10-7) in a nonleague game at Littlerock.

HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING

El Camino Real 38, San Fernando 32--El Camino Real (10-9-1) won six of 13 weight classes against San Fernando with one class ending in a draw in the Highland 10-way tournament at Highland High.

El Camino Real finished fourth and San Fernando finished fifth. Barstow won the tournament with Littlerock and Sunny Hills finishing second and third.

El Camino Real senior Matthew Austin (19-2) won the 160-pound division by going 9-0 in the two-day tournament.
