The Crescenta Valley girls’ soccer team, in its second year of competition, is enjoying another outstanding season.

The Falcons, who play as an independent in the Southern Section 3-A Division, improved their record to 13-3 with a victory over La Mirada on Friday.

Last season, Crescenta Valley finished 18-1, its only loss coming in the playoffs against Louisville.

The Falcons have 12 shutouts this season and all three of their losses have been by one goal. Jodi Larson and Nancy Allen have been the leaders of a team that has scored 50 goals and allowed only nine, despite the absence of standout sophomore Jennifer Beall, who suffered an ankle injury that has sidelined her since the second game.

“We’ve had a few key injuries but a lot of girls have filled in well,” Coach Judd Bogust said. “We’re playing a higher level of soccer this year. We’re doing a lot more passing. We’re not scoring as many goals as last season but we’re playing better competition.”

The La Canada boys’ basketball team is the strongest in the area, but basketball is not the only sport the Spartans’ are dominating.

La Canada’s boys soccer team, 11-0-2 overall and 3-0 in the Rio Hondo League, is the ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section’s Division 1-A poll.

La Canada, under Coach Louie Bilowitz, defeated Monrovia, 2-0, on Friday.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College men’s basketball team continues to plague itself with inept free-throw shooting.

The Vaqueros made only eight of 18 free throws on Saturday in a 55-47 loss to Oxnard that dropped Glendale’s record to 10-9 overall and 3-2 in the Western State Conference.

“If we make the free throws, we win that game,” Glendale Coach Brian Beauchemin said. “I don’t know what’s going on with the free throws. The kids shoot them fine in practice, but when it comes to the games, they just aren’t making them.”

Glendale’s problems weren’t limited to the free-throw line against Oxnard. The Vaqueros failed to make a shot of any kind during the final eight minutes.

On the upside, Glendale is playing excellent defense. No WSC opponent has scored more than 64 points against the Vaqueros, who play at Santa Monica on Saturday.

COLLEGES

The Occidental men’s basketball team entered the week still searching for its first victory in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn.

The Tigers lost their conference opener to Whittier, 96-83, in overtime, then suffered a 78-75 defeat to Cal Lutheran on Saturday.

The loss to Cal Lutheran was particularly painful for Occidental, which had tied the score, 75-75, with 30 seconds left.

Sophomore Blair Slattery is averaging 19 points and 11 rebounds for Occidental, which plays at Redlands on Saturday.
