Coach Seeks to Return to Sea Kings

Dale Flickinger has applied for the girls’ volleyball coach opening at Corona del Mar, a position he held two seasons ago, when he led the Sea Kings to a State title.
Flickinger coached the Sea Kings in 1990 as a temporary replacement for Charlie Brande, who was fired for violating a Southern Section rule on coaching players in the off-season. The Sea Kings were 27-1 and won the Southern Section 5-A and State Division I titles.
Flickinger didn’t apply for the permanent job after the season because he would have had to coach the boys’ and girls’ teams. Flickinger, an engineer at Hughes Aircraft, wanted to coach only the girls’ team.
He was the Volleyball Monthly prep volleyball reporter last season, and applied for the Sea King girls’ job when Mark Rivadeneyra resigned in January to pursue other interests.
“It’s my understanding that they (Corona del Mar officials) will split the boys’ and girls’ jobs up,” Flickinger said.
Corona del Mar Athletic Director Jerry Jelnick said no timetable has been set for hiring a coach.
