HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Rancho Bernardo Presses on, Wins

Third-ranked Rancho Bernardo used its press and scored the game’s first 14 points in a 66-32 victory Thursday over Oceanside in an Avocado League girls’ basketball game.

The Broncos (14-2, 5-1) took a 35-9 lead by halftime.

“We pressed at the beginning and it took them 20 seconds to get ball across the half-court line,” RB Coach Peggy Brose said. “(Oceanside) didn’t function well at all against our press.”

Rancho Bernardo had four players in double figures, led by Carol Pajarillo with 19 points.

Oceanside (0-6, 2-14) got 12 points from Nykia Burnside.

In other Avocado League games:

Carlsbad 61, Ramona 44--Holly Gerdes scored 20 and Vanessa Nygaard had 19 for No. 2 Carlsbad (11-2, 6-0), which also got 13 from Dawn Laukes 13. Ramona’s Kisha Riggs had 11 and Jennifer Andreacchi added 10. Ramona (0-15, 0-6) trailed by five at the quarter, but a couple of turnovers turned the momentum and Carlsbad built a 33-21 halftime lead.

Metro Conference

Chula Vista 69, Castle Park 59--Chula Vista (7-9, 5-2) got 22 points from Allison Hines, 19 from Jennifer Benitez and 10 from Shalanda Fuller. Dolores Odom led Castle Park with 30 points and Autumn Baily had 14.

Palomar League

Mt. Carmel 57, Torrey Pines 35--Jennifer Alley and Beth Dykman pulled fourth-ranked Mt. Carmel (10-3, 5-1) out of its funk by scoring 18 of the Sundevils’ 22 second-quarter points. Mt. Carmel was coming off of its upset of top-ranked Poway Tuesday night.

Avocado League

Carlsbad 36, Escondido 31--Carlsbad heavyweight Tafi Mauga pinned Sean Phillips in 3:33 to pin Escondido with its first loss of the season. Carlsbad (9-2, 3-0), which trailed 27-8, also got victories Gabe Chao, Mike Mexter, Monte Bell and Chris Tieman.

Grossmont 2-A

Valhalla 53, El Capitan 5--Valhalla remained unbeaten as Fernando Carrillo (145), Tom North (189) and heavyweight Mike McKirahan won by fall.
