Tight End Commits to Aztecs

Adrian Ioja, an all-Orange County defensive lineman who also played tight end for Garden Grove, made an oral commitment Wednesday to play football at San Diego State.

San Diego State recruited the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Ioja to play tight end, according to Garden Grove Coach Jeff Buenafe.

Ioja also was the kicker for the Argonauts. He kicked four field goals and 23 conversions to lead Garden Grove to a 10-0 regular-season finish.

Mira Mesa High quarterback Chad Davis, a second-team Times all-San Diego County selection, announced he will play football for Oklahoma. Davis, who set the national high school passing record with 9,332 career yards, chose Oklahoma over Colorado.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Erik Johnson scored 16 points in only 12 minutes then took the rest of the night off as UC San Diego had an easy time defeating visiting Menlo, 85-59, in a nonconference game. Andy Swindall added 13 points and Chris Moore had 11 for UCSD.

Poway girls’ volleyball Coach Lisa Reis and girls’ swimming Coach Dennis Moore have been named state coaches of the year in their respective sports by the California Coaches Assn.

Poway is the defending Division I girls’ volleyball champion. Under Reis, the school has won six league titles and seven county titles the past eight years. She has a career coaching record of 240-52.

Moore’s girls finished the year ranked 14th in the nation and second in the state. They have won the Section title the past three years and four out of the past five. The boys’ team at Poway also won the section title the past three years, the first two with Moore as coach; he stepped aside last year to concentrate on the development of the girls’ program.

Moore has an 82-18 combined record at Poway.

TENNIS

Jose Luis Noriega of University of San Diego, seventh on the Volvo Tennis/Collegiate Rankings, defeated 22nd-ranked Cary Lothringer of Pepperdine, 6-4, 6-1, in a quarterfinal match of the Adidas Invitational Tennis Championships at Grand Champions Resort in Indian Wells.

In doubles, Kerry Safdie and Joe McDonough of San Diego State lost a quarterfinal match to Bill Behrens and Mark Knowles of UCLA, 6-3, 6-3.
