The Marshall High girls’ basketball team may be young, but the Barristers are enjoying another successful season under fourth-year Coach Wendy Triplett.

The Barristers, who won City Section 3-A Division championships in 1988-89 and 1989-90, entered the week 10-4 overall and 4-0 in the Northern League.

Marshall is led by junior guard Maria Fulay, who is averaging 20 points a game. Fulay is one of only two players returning from last season’s team, which was upset by Huntington Park in the 3-A quarterfinals.

Sophomore forward Leanne Quon and freshman guard Jamie Kogan are two of the young players who have stepped in to fill the void left by seven players who graduated.

“Compared to the last few years, this is not one of our stronger teams,” Triplett said. “But we’re improving. If we jell, we could do some things in the playoffs.”

The La Canada girls’ basketball team was sidetracked Friday when the Spartans lost a Rio Hondo League game to Blair, 44-40.

The defeat left La Canada (13-7) and Blair (12-6) tied atop the league standings with 5-1 records.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College men’s basketball team began the final portion of its regular-season schedule this week with an eye toward the playoffs.

Glendale was 12-11 overall and 2-2 in the Western State Conference Southern Division following Saturday’s 70-57 loss to Valley.

The Vaqueros played College of the Canyons Wednesday night and will play host to West Los Angeles Saturday and Santa Monica next Wednesday. Those three opponents entered the week tied for first place in the Southern Division with 3-1 records.

Glendale Coach Brian Beauchemin said a decent record in the final six games should ensure his team of a spot in the 26-team Southern California playoffs.

“Our difficulty of schedule is very good,” Beauchemin said. “My feeling is, if we finish at least 6-4 in conference, we’ll get a bid.”

The Glendale College baseball team suffered two big losses before its season even began when the Vaqueros lost All-Western State Conference players Mickey Moreno and Jose Robles for academic reasons.

Glendale then went out lost three consecutive games in the Foothill Citrus tournament.

Vaquero Coach Steve Coots has a team that includes 20 freshmen and six sophomores. Mike Regan, who batted .350 and was all-conference last season, is Glendale’s top returning offensive player.

Sophomore right-hander Rock DeTolve is the team’s top returning pitcher. DeTolve was 8-1 with a 2.28 earned-run average last season.

COLLEGES

The Occidental men’s basketball team has lost all four of its overtime games this season.

The Tigers lost to Pomona-Pitzer, 77-76, in overtime Saturday, dropping to 7-10 overall and 1-5 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Tigers could have won the game in regulation, but sophomore forward Blair Slattery missed an uncontested breakaway layup in the final seconds.

Occidental, which plays six of its remaining eight games at home, begins the second round of SCIAC play Saturday at home against Whittier.

The Occidental College baseball team opened its season with a 7-2 victory over Pomona-Pitzer.

The Tigers, under Coach Jeff Henderson, finished 14-19 last season and 9-9 in the SCIAC.

Sophomore Blair Slattery, an All-Southern Section infielder at San Marino High in 1990, will join the baseball team after basketball season. Slattery is the basketball team’s leading scorer and rebounder.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Maria Fulay, Marshall--Fulay, a 5-foot-3 guard, scored 32 points on Friday in the Barristers’ 53-36 victory over Franklin.

Fulay, a junior who was the most valuable player in the Northern League last season, is averaging 20 points a game for Marshall, which plays Hollywood on Friday.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Dan Hart, Occidental--Hart, a freshman right-hander, made an impressive debut in the Tigers’ season-opening 7-2 victory over Pomona-Pitzer.

Hart gave up one run and eight eights in eight innings. He struck out two and did not issue a walk.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Mike Norseth--Norseth, a former Crescenta Valley High three-sport standout, was chosen in the third round of the World League of American Football draft by the Birmingham Fire.

Norseth, 27, who played quarterback at Kansas, has spent time with the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, Green Bay Packers and Houston Oilers.

MISCELLANY

Derrick Williams, a sophomore who started at quarterback for Occidental College last fall, has transferred to Cal State Fullerton. . . . The Crescenta Valley High drill team is in the midst of a fund-raising drive to help finance its trip to the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.
