SIGNING DAY: Wednesday was national football signing day, but just 14 local high school players signed letters of intent with Division 1 colleges (C8), well below most years. . . . However, two of the county’s most coveted athletes are only juniors--Los Alamitos quarterback Tim Carey and Esperanza lineman Travis Kirschke. Carey’s coach, John Barnes, says USC and Washington recruiters say that if Carey “had been a senior, he would’ve been one of the top five recruits in the nation.”
