NEWPORT BEACH — Although nearly shut out in the fourth quarter, the Newport Harbor girls’ basketball team had built a big enough lead through three quarters to cruise to a 51-26 victory over University in a Sea View League game Thursday at Newport Harbor.
The Sailors (14-7, 6-2 in league), ranked seventh in the county, jumped to an 18-2 lead after one quarter and 28-12 at the half behind the shooting of junior guard Michaela Ross, who scored nine of her game-high 17 points in the first half. The lead was 47-20 after three quarters.
University (14-8, 5-3), playing without injured point guard Nicole Gallardo, had trouble with the full-court press and committed 23 turnovers. The Trojans fell into a third-place tie in the league with Woodbridge, one game behind Newport Harbor and Tustin.
Center Maureen McLaren scored 13 points and had a game-high 13 rebounds for the Sailors. Forwards Jennifer Stanley and Tara Wolff each scored eight points for University.
