HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Early Goal Enough for Burroughs to Beat Burbank

Defender Luis Aguilar’s goal 12 minutes into the match proved decisive for visiting Burroughs High in a 1-0 victory over cross-town rival Burbank on Thursday in a Foothill League boys’ soccer match.

Aguilar scored on a header after a throw-in from Ricky Persson to Ian Leiviska.

Goalie Leonardo Rossetti had four saves to notch the Indians’ school-record 11th shutout of the season.

Burroughs, ranked eighth in the Southern Section 3-A Division, improved to 15-4-2, 5-2-1 in league play. The Bulldogs fell to 8-7-5, 1-3-4.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Buena 60, Santa Barbara 18--Mikko Giordano scored 19 points and Laura Dahl added 10 as Buena (19-1, 12-0) won a Channel League game.

Santa Barbara was held to two points in the first quarter, four in the second and one in the third. No Santa Barbara player scored more than six points.

Thousand Oaks 71, Agoura 20--Michelle Palmisano scored 37 points to pace the Lancers (21-1, 11-0) in a Marmonte League rout of host Agoura (3-15, 0-11).

Palmisano, who made seven of seven free throws, is just four points short of 2,500 in her career.

Sasha Scardino added 16 points and Melissa Wood had 10 for Thousand Oaks, which took a 22-4 lead after one quarter.

Alemany 51, St. Bernard 44--The Indians took over sole possession of first place in the Mission League with the victory at St. Bernard.

Sam Wrigley scored a game-high 16 points and Sarah Guziel added 12 for Alemany (19-4, 7-1), which entered the match ranked fourth in the Southern Section 2-A Division. St. Bernard fell to 6-2.

Westlake 63, Simi Valley 44--Lauren Goldstine had 26 points and 12 rebounds and Marlee Organ added 12 points, six assists and seven steals for Westlake (18-4, 10-1) in a Marmonte League game. Sara Griffin scored 12 points and Heather Eubanks added 11 for Simi Valley.

Channel Islands 50, Newbury Park 35--Shawanda Hotchkiss scored 20 points to lead the Raiders (9-2 in league play) in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park.

Megan Asbury led the Panthers (9-11, 3-8) with 14 points.

La Reina 51, St. Bonaventure 37--Kena Morton scored 18 points to lead unbeaten La Reina (16-0, 8-0) past the Seraphs (10-10, 5-3) in a Tri-Valley League game at St. Bonaventure.

Bell-Jeff 50, El Segundo 6--Cathy Flores scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Guards (20-3, 7-0) in a San Fernando League victory over visiting El Segundo.

Oak Park 49, Carpinteria 30--Jodi Runyan had 15 points, 16 rebounds and four steals to lead Oak Park (11-8, 6-2) in a Tri-Valley League game.

Twins Alisha and Alexa Valavanis added 11 and 10 points for Oak Park.

Maranatha 51, Village Christian 26--Lori Kobachigawa scored a team-high 10 points for Village Christian (11-8, 4-4) in a lopsided Alpha League game against host Maranatha (8-0).

L.A. Baptist 53, Montclair Prep 34--Lori Neville had 24 points and 22 rebounds in an Alpha League game at L.A. Baptist.

Neville was 11 for 16 from the field, and teammate Darcie Frazier added 12 points.

Kendra Dousette scored 19 points for the Mounties.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Queen of Angels 56, Calvary Baptist 51--Ben Tran scored 11 points and teammate Joe Wilhelm added 10 to lead Queen of Angels (6-2) to a nonleague victory.

West Valley Christian 55, Hillcrest Christian 43--Jason Pike scored 12 points and Mike Wilkinson added 10 points and 14 rebounds to lead West Valley Christian in a Westside League game at the Pacific Boys Lodge.

WRESTLING

Birmingham 39, Chatsworth 36--The Braves (1-6, 1-3) won a West Valley League dual meet that included nine forfeits.

Six of the forfeits went Birmingham’s way. The Braves’ only decision came from Milton Montiel at 189 pounds and secured the team’s first dual meet victory.

Each of Chatsworth’s non-forfeit victories came on pins, by Fernando Avilar (140 pounds), Juan Azucena (145) and Shanoosh Tinoosh (152). Avilar’s pin came in 47 seconds.

Harvard-Westlake 39, Chaminade 36--The victorious Wolverines (14-2, 4-0) had three pins and three technical pins in a San Fernando League dual meet at home.

Stan Kang (119), Kevin Lin (140) and Josh Minuto (heavyweight) recorded pins.
