PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Corona del Mar Knocks Off Ninth-Ranked Woodbridge

Center Theo Rokos scored 14 points as Corona del Mar upset ninth-ranked Woodbridge, 47-44, in a Sea View League boys’ basketball Friday at Woodbridge High School. The loss dropped Woodbridge (15-5, 6-2 in league) out of a first-place tie with Tustin.
Rokos, a senior, was held to seven points in the teams’ previous meeting Jan. 17, which Woodbridge won, 68-38.
Friday, with the score tied, 43-43, with 1 minute 30 seconds remaining, Woodbridge’s Todd Loewe made one of two free throws to give the Warriors a 44-43 lead.
Rokos then made a three-point play giving Corona del Mar a 46-44 lead with about a minute left. Corona del Mar took a 47-44 lead when Todd Merriman made one of two free throws with about 30 seconds left. Woodbridge could have tied it with a three-pointer, but lost the ball out of bounds with 12 seconds left.
Doug Hesse added 11 for Corona del Mar (9-14, 2-6).
In other Sea View League games:
University 71, Newport Harbor 56--Josh Whelihan had 19 points and nine rebounds for host University (9-14, 3-5). Justin McIntee had 25 for Newport Harbor (10-12, 2-6).
Tustin 73, Saddleback 57--Jentry Moore scored 18 points and Maurice Fletcher added 17 for host Tustin (16-7, 6-1). Jason Register scored 26 points for Saddleback (12-10, 4-4).
In the Angelus League:
Mater Dei 74, Loyola 50--Mater Dei (24-1, 8-0) outscored Loyola 28-8 in the third quarter, forcing 13 turnovers while making 11 of 15 shots in the quarter. Miles Simon had 16 points, including four three-pointers, and Marmet Williams had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Monarchs, the top-ranked team in the county.
Servite 46, St. John Bosco 38--Adam Anderson scored 15 points and Matt Kenney and Eddie Rubio each had 11 for Servite (11-11, 4-4).
Bishop Amat 78, Santa Margarita 70--Michael Carpenter scored 21 points, including two three-pointers, for Santa Margarita (17-6, 4-4). Bishop Amat is 6-2.
In the Empire League:
Esperanza 79, Loara 46--Matt Kordic scored 23 points for visiting Esperanza, which is tied for first with Los Alamitos at 7-1. Ron Harris scored 15 for Loara (4-17, 0-8).
Los Alamitos 89, Katella 71--Jason Cunningham had 25 points and 12 rebounds for Los Alamitos (16-9, 7-1). Gary Roditis led Katella with 17 points. Los Alamitos opened a 57-29 halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way.
El Dorado 68, Cypress 60--Mike Johnson scored 21 points and had nine assists for El Dorado (13-10, 4-4). Brent D’Arc added 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Golden Hawks.
In the Century League:
Santa Ana Valley 50, Villa Park 37--The game was delayed early in the third quarter when Villa Park’s Ryan McArthur was knocked unconscious by a collision while attempting a dunk. McArthur is Villa Park’s leading scorer and rebounder. He was taken by paramedics to a local hospital, where he was treated for a concussion and released.
Anthony Porter led Santa Ana Valley with 17 points. McArthur scored 16 to lead Villa Park.
El Modena 67, Canyon 53--Fred Forbes had 24 points and seven rebounds for El Modena (15-7, 6-2). Canyon is 9-11, 3-5.
Foothill 64, Orange 58--Jared Winger hit 12 of 15 free throws and scored 18 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter as the Knights outscored the Panthers, 20-14.
In the Arrowhead League:
LaVerne Lutheran 60, Calvary Chapel 59--Jacob Guild had 18 points and 19 rebounds for Calvary Chapel (15-9, 9-1).
In the Academy League:
St. Michael’s Prep 79, Heritage Christian 72--Jocques Wright had nine of his 31 points in the fourth quarter as the Pioneers outscored the Patriots, 20-13.
Liberty Christian 88, Cal Lutheran 74--Dave Kellams had a triple-double for Liberty Christian, scoring 16 points with 12 assists and 11 rebounds.
