WRESTLING

The showdown between Fairbanks (Alaska) West Valley High, ranked 13th nationally in Wrestling USA, and Poway, ranked fourth nationally by USA Today, wasn’t nearly the battle everyone expected. Poway won eight matches by fall.

“I think they’re a great team,” West Valley Coach David Toney said. “I hope they win the state title; if you’re going to get beat, you want to get beat by the best.”

Poway (19-0) has a 171-2-1 record dating back to the 1970s, while West Valley (2-1) is 78-4 over the past five years.
