HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : City Eastern League

Point Loma 62, Morse 47--The Pointers clinched at least a tie for their 12th consecutive league title. Sharinda Hunter led four Point Loma players in double-figure scoring with 17 points and added nine rebounds. Tonnah Smoot led all scorers with 19 for Morse (12-11, 3-4).

City Harbor League

Christian 60, OLP 53--Behind Tiffany Stutz’ 33 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals, Christian (15-4, 6-1) took the league lead with one game remaining. OLP (13-8, 5-2) started the week undefeated in league, but lost in double overtime to Coronado Wednesday. For Christian, Jenny Culbertson scored 18 points, and Stephanie Chadwell added 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Coastal League

Bishop’s 62, Mtn. Empire 27--Mandi Updegraff had 19 points and eight rebounds and Alexa Fontanini 13 points for Bishop’s (16-5, 5-1).

Grossmont 2-A League

El Cajon Valley 70, West Hills 14--Sophomore center Tanya Strong had 12 blocks, the fourth-highest total in Section history, and 10 rebounds, and Heather Holm had 29 points and 12 assists for No. 10 El Cajon Valley (18-4, 5-1), which led 26-0 before Shea Ford made a three-point shot with no time remaining in the first quarter.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Avocado League

El Camino 68, San Pasqual 54--After a slow start San Pasqual (9-14, 6-6) took a brief two-point lead in the third quarter. But No. 9 El Camino (17-6, 10-2) dominated the rest of the way as Trey Crayton scored 12 of his 14 points in a 23-point fourth quarter. El Camino led, 32-21, at halftime before Shane Carlson led San Pasqual’s third-quarter rally, making three three-point baskets. Carlson and David Durst each scored 18. However, El Camino’s Mike Booker controlled play inside with 24 points and eight rebounds, and Bryant Westbrook had 16 points, three blocks and three steals.

Carlsbad 66, Oceanside 47--Kewan Shariff scored 17 points and Chad Nelson 16 to lead No. 4 Carlsbad (18-6, 12-0). Oceanside fell to 8-14, 4-8.

Rancho Bernardo 76, San Marcos 54--Kirk Hipple and David Santos scored 19 and 17 points, respectively, for Rancho Bernardo (15-8, 8-4). Horace Carey poured in 25 points for the Knights (5-15, 2-10). Tied at the end of the first quarter, the Broncos took control in the second, outscoring San Marcos by 10.

Escondido 56, Ramona 41--Escondido (9-12, 4-8) won its second in a row, getting 19 points from Damian Cephas. Rusty Hoss led Ramona (6-14, 2-10) with 14 points.

City Central League

Lincoln 84, Crawford 41--No. 8 Lincoln led, 48-12, at the half. Berry Randle and Hosa Baker combined for 40 points for the Hornets (17-8, 6-0). Sophomores Rahman Anderson (12 points) and Altie Parker (11) paced Crawford (3-18, 0-6).

Madison 72, Hoover 47--Madison (14-10, 6-1) set up a title showdown Wednesday with Lincoln by running away from Hoover (4-16, 1-5). The Warhawks led, 23-8, after a quarter and built the lead to 46-24 at halftime. Matt Baker scored 20 points, Jason Cordell 15 and Greg Amos 14 for Madison.

City Eastern League

Morse 51, Point Loma 49--The Tigers (16-5, 6-1) built a 26-14 halftime lead, then withstood a furious comeback by the Pointers (12-9, 3-3), who had a 25-point fourth quarter but never quite caught up. Morse’s Tony Martin led all scorers with 15 points. Micheal Driver led three Pointers in double figures with 11 points.

City Western League

La Jolla 60, Mission Bay 49--For the third consecutive game, La Jolla (10-11, 4-2) held its opponent under 20 points at the half. Jose Fregoso led the Vikings with 15 points and Chris Hayman added 13. Mission Bay fell to 7-16, 1-5).

Coastal League

Bishop’s 57, Julian 40--Nelson Ackerly contributed 18 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks for Bishop’s (14-7, 7-3).

Grossmont 3-A League

Helix 79, Granite Hills 68--The Eagles led, 19-18, after the first period, but it was all Helix and Kevin Hagen after that. Hagen made nine of 10 shots from the field and finished with 24 points. Teammate Lloyd Lake had 18 points and 14 rebounds as Helix improved to 16-6, 5-2. Granite Hills (12-9, 3-4) got 20 points from Bill Wade and 16 from Troy Meier.

Grossmont 65, Mt. Miguel 59--Mike Kingsley entered the game averaging 18 points, but scored 32 for last-place Grossmont (12-10, 1-5). Robbie Sandoval bumped his head and missed the fourth quarter, but had already scored 17 points for Mt. Miguel (12-11, 3-3).

Grossmont 2-A League

Santana 47, El Capitan 46--Santana’s nine-point lead in the fourth quarter vanished as El Capitan hit three in a row from three-point range, and even took a one-point lead with 20 seconds left. The Sultans (6-14, 3-4) scored off a rebound to go up by one and the game ended when the Vacqueros (10-14, 3-4) couldn’t get a final shot off. Mark Bennett’s 18 points and 12 rebounds led Santana.

Palomar League

Fallbrook 93, Vista 87--Steve Pack and Chad Lemons each scored 23 points in leading 10th-ranked Fallbrook (17-7, 7-5) over No. 5 Vista (15-8, 9-2). There were 52 fouls called, 39 against visiting Vista, which saw all five starters foul out. Senior forward Nils Michals scored 22 points, and junior guard Shane Jager 19 for Vista.

Rancho Buena Vista 91, San Dieguito 79--Rancho Buena Vista turned a nine-point halftime deficit into a victory with a 27-7 run in the third quarter in Vista. James Vandeveur led the Longhorns (9-16, 2-10) in the decisive quarter with eight points, and he finished with 28. David Damian scored 34 points and Ryan Mancuso 13 for the Mustangs (10-14, 3-9).

Torrey Pines 55, Orange Glen 34--Orange Glen (2-20, 0-12) tried to freeze the ball in the second half, but it was too late. No. 1 Torrey Pines (21-3, 12-0) shot 73% (22 of 30), built a 35-25 halftime lead and outscored Orange Glen in the final quarter, 7-0, when the Patriots held the ball for most of it. Peter Bates led Torrey Pines with 20 points, and Scot Pollard had 18 points, six rebounds and four blocks.

Nonleague

Serra 61, San Diego 54--San Diego erased most of a 33-18 halftime deficit with a third-quarter surge, but came up short as Serra’s Justin Wible scored 20 points and Barry Van Cleave had 18 points and 14 rebounds. After Serra (12-6) built the big first-half lead, San Diego (10-9) exploded for a 27-15 third quarter to cut the lead to three points, but got no closer.

USDHS 78, Coronado 62--Ian Hamilton’s 29 points paced USDHS (4-15). Sophomore Jon Fink scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Dons. Jason Switzer led Coronado (3-20) with 18 points.
