Milers Top Local Entries in Sunkist Meet

Jeff Wilson of Newbury Park High, Ryan Wilson of Agoura, Angel Martinez of San Gabriel, Corey Ihmels of Williston, N.D., and Jama Bile of Fork Union, Va., will renew their rivalry in the boys’ mile in the Sunkist Invitational indoor track and field meet today at the Sports Arena.

When the quintet last raced, in December, Ihmels won the Kinney national cross-country title. Jeff Wilson finished second in the 5,000-meter race and Martinez placed fourth. Bile and Ryan Wilson were 23rd and 28th, respectively.

The race, scheduled to begin at 8:38 p.m., has been billed as the national high school indoor mile championship.

Todd Tressler of San Marcos and T.J. Reyes of Lakewood, who finished second and sixth, respectively, in the 1,600 meters in last year’s state meet, also have entered.

Nikki Shaw of Fillmore, Erica Sumi of Long Beach Wilson and Robin Snowbeck of University, second, fifth and sixth in the 1,600 in last year’s state meet, are entered in the girls’ seeded mile.

Amber Parkinson of Orange Lutheran, Carrie Garritson of Sunny Hills and Maribella Aparicio of Fillmore will run in the girls’ two-mile.

Parkinson, Garritson and Aparicio were fourth, fifth and sixth in the 3,200 in last year’s state meet.

Margarito Casillas of Hoover, fifth in the Kinney nationals, heads the list of entries in the boys’ two-mile.

In other high school events, Erik Holcomb of Westlake and Mike Moguel of Birmingham, the region’s fastest 400-meter sprinters last season, will compete in the 500-yard dash.

Raymond Banner of Birmingham, the defending City Section champion in the 110-meter high hurdles, is entered in the 50-meter highs.

Karla Knudsen of Rio Mesa, the region’s co-leader (5 feet 6 inches) in the girls’ high jump last season, will compete in that event.

The meet begins with heats of the boys’ two-mile relay at 12:10 p.m. and concludes with the men’s mile at 9:20.

The open events begin at 6 p.m. with the men’s pole vault.
