David Goldstein set the Rancho Santiago single-game record for strikeouts with 15 in only seven innings as the Dons beat Mt. San Jacinto, 12-5, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday in Santa Ana.

Goldstein, a sophomore right-hander from Irvine High School, allowed a run and four hits and left leading, 8-1.

Andy Wise worked the final 1 2/3 innings for the save. Wise had two strikeouts. Rancho Santiago pitchers have struck out 31 batters in the past two games.

It was the first time in nearly two weeks Goldstein has pitched because of rainouts. He is 1-1 this season.

“Working out in the gym is a downer,” Goldstein said. “You just want to get out here in the yard and throw. . . . I was just going after them with my fastball. My slider didn’t come around until the sixth.”

Goldstein had a high of nine strikeouts last season at Rancho Santiago. The previous record at the college had been 13, accomplished five times, most recently by Paul O’Hern in 1991.

Chris Lugo had two hits and drove in three runs and Jeff Richardson had a double, triple and two runs batted in for Rancho Santiago (5-4).
