If he does not play another basketball game for Cal State Northridge, Keith Gibbs will finish eighth among the Matadors’ all-time assist leaders with 176 and in a tie for 10th in steals with 63. Gibbs, who played in Northridge’s 102-95 upset of Loyola Marymount on Tuesday, is expected to miss the team’s final three games because of the death of his step-father.

Gibbs is the leading scorer on the team with a 15.2-point average on 48% shooting. He also is averaging 5.1 rebounds. Last season, Gibbs averaged nine points (on 39% shooting) and four rebounds.

Basketball: The Northridge front line put up its best numbers of the season against Loyola Marymount. Forward Shelton Boykin scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds; starting center Brian Kilian scored 11 points, had eight rebounds and two steals; and backup center Percy Fisher scored 16 points (on seven-of-eight shooting) and had seven rebounds. . . .

Kilian set the Northridge season high for rebounds in a game with 13 against Wisconsin Milwaukee. . . . Senior guard David Keeter is fourth on the Matadors’ all-time list for three-point field goals with 47. . . . Sixth man James Morris has missed three games and averages just 18 minutes a game yet he is second only to Gibbs (28) in steals with 27. . . .

With one home game remaining--Saturday against Northeastern Illinois--Northridge is averaging 1,003 at Matador Gymnasium. Last season, Northridge averaged 721 and its largest crowd was 1,274. Tuesday’s crowd of 2,276 was the Matadors’ largest this season. . . .

D.J. Jackson had 35 points and 11 rebounds in Antelope Valley’s 129-93 victory over San Bernardino Valley on Monday that gave the Marauders (18-12, 12-3) at least a share of their third consecutive Foothill Conference title. In the process Jackson broke Tony Madison’s single-season scoring record of 809 points, set last season.

Jackson, who is averaging 30 points and 13.1 rebounds a game, had 839 points heading into Wednesday night’s game at Desert. . . .

Simon O’Donnell, a 6-foot-6 senior center at Cal Lutheran, was sidelined for three games because of a muscle injury in his leg, and three players shared time as his replacement. It took the efforts of all three to make up for O’Donnell’s absence.

Freshmen Jared Byrne, Mike Fenton and Dewayne Chatman have combined for 15.8 rebounds per game through those three games, two of which the Kingsmen (11-11, 7-3 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play) lost.

O’Donnell averages 15.6 rebounds.

Volleyball: Axel Hagar, a junior transfer from Germany, leads Northridge in digs with 69 and is second in kills with 159. . . . Craig Hewitt, a sophomore from Chatsworth High, leads the Matadors in hitting percentage at .389%. . . .

Northridge moved from No. 10 to No. 6 in the Volleyball Monthly poll after the Matadors finished second in the ASICS tournament in San Diego last weekend. The Matadors will meet fourth-ranked UCLA at the Wooden Center on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Softball: Catcher Patti Pearson leads Northridge in batting with a .351 average, including three triples. . . . Backup catcher Missy Cress is the leader in runs batted in (seven) and doubles (four). Cress, a transfer from Moorpark College, is batting .310. . . .

As a team, Northridge is batting .266. Its opponents are batting .287. . . . The Matadors hit four home runs in the Arizona Classic tournament last weekend, matching their total of last season. Pearson, Kim Oakes, Beth Calcante and Jen Fleming homered in Arizona; in 1991, Calcante hit three home runs and Tamara Ivie hit one.
