HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Ventura Advances in Wrestling

Senior Scott Adams strengthened his hold as the Southern Section’s premier 189-pound wrestler and Ventura High advanced to the inaugural 3-A Division dual-meet finals with three victories Wednesday in the preliminary tournament at Ventura.

Adams, the defending 189-pound 3-A champion, extended his record to 27-0 with a victory and two pins, including a 48-second win over West Torrance’s Marcelo Shin in the preliminary final. The pin was Adams’ 22nd of the season, tying a school record.

Ventura (20-1), ranked No. 1 in the 3-A, defeated West Torrance, 41-20, after recording victories over San Luis Obispo (48-10) and South Hills (45-14).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

North Hollywood 78, Sherman Oaks CES 39--DeShawn Harvey scored a game-high 23 points and Damon Ollie added 17 for visiting North Hollywood (22-1, 9-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Sylmar 63, Poly 48--Rodney Smith had 20 rebounds to go with 11 points for host Sylmar (2-14) in an East Valley League game.

Grant 58, Birmingham 48--Darwin Alfelor scored 21 points to lead visiting Grant in an East Valley League game. Booker Montgomery led Birmingham with 13 points.

Verdugo Hills 65, Franklin 49--Eddie Powell had 27 points and nine assists for host Verdugo Hills (10-8, 4-3) in a Northeast League game. Chan Cornish added 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Van Nuys 64, Canoga Park 60 (OT)--Eric Grayson had 28 points and 17 rebounds for host Van Nuys (8-11, 6-3) in a Mid-Valley League game. Charles Adams scored 25 points for Canoga Park (2-19, 1-9).

Kennedy 73, Granada Hills 55--Joe Wyatt scored a game-high 22 points and Ronnie Gipson added 12 for host Kennedy (16-8, 5-4) in a North Valley League game.

Chatsworth 75, El Camino Real 60--Brady Mertes had 22 points and 14 rebounds and Chris Dunbar had 15 assists to spark the host Chancellors (14-6, 6-2) in a West Valley League game.

Reseda 78, San Fernando 59--Marquis Burns scored 12 of his 37 points in the second quarter for Reseda (11-5, 6-1) in a West Valley League game.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Hart 74, Hueneme 40--Shannon Martin tied a career-high with 28 points as host Hart (12-13) coasted in the Southern Section Division I-A qualifying-round game.

Simi Valley 51, Quartz Hill 48--Sara Griffin had 13 points and six rebounds to lead Simi Valley (12-12) in a Division I-AA qualifying-round game at Quartz Hill. Becky Raines scored 15 points for the Rebels (13-9).

Oxnard 57, Saugus 43--Lupe Aguilar had 19 points and nine rebounds for host Oxnard (14-8) in a Division I-A qualifying round playoff game.

Chaminade 63, San Gabriel Mission 20--Maria Costa scored a game-high 19 points to lead Chaminade (17-9) in a Division IV-AA qualifying-round game.

Kennedy 71, Reseda 49--Shaneya Harris had 34 points and 15 rebounds to lead visiting Kennedy (13-6, 7-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

El Camino Real 60, Cleveland 26--Jessica Dinaberg had 17 points and 12 rebounds for host El Camino Real in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Granada Hills 57, San Fernando 36--Karen Berkowitz scored 30 points to pace Granada Hills (8-6, 6-3) in a Northwest Valley Conference game. Shelise Tillman added 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Grant 52, Birmingham 19--Nicole Baynes had 20 points, 25 rebounds and 10 steals to lead Grant (12-3, 7-0) to its fourth straight East Valley League title.

Sylmar 44, Poly 24--Shantye Morgan had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Sylmar in an East Valley League game.

North Hollywood 81, Sherman Oaks CES 29--Suzi Shimoyama and Darvena Merritt each scored 16 points for the Huskies in a Mid-Valley League game.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Birmingham 4, Sylmar 0--Oscar Portillo, Tony Serpas, Juan Hueso, and Hugo Gonzalez each scored for visiting Birmingham, which clinched the Valley Pac-8 Conference title with a 7-1-2 record.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Westlake 1, Santa Monica 0 (shootout)--Brianne O’Brien and Erica Olson scored during a shootout and goalie Audrey Maxfield stopped four of five Santa Monica shots to give the Warriors a Southern Section 4-A wild-card playoff win.

Crescenta Valley 4, Hart 1--Bethany Oxley scored two goals for Crescenta Valley (17-4) in a 3-A wild-card match at Hart.
