HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Santa Clara Coasts in 1st-Round Win, 63-31

Top-seeded Santa Clara High jumped to a 20-point halftime lead and easily advanced to the second round of the Southern Section Division IV-AA boys’ basketball playoffs with a 63-31 victory over El Segundo on Friday night at Santa Clara.

Guard Art Barron led the Saints (22-3) with 19 points and 10 assists.

In other Southern Section first-round boys’ basketball playoff games:

Simi Valley 74, Chino 62--Danny Alexander had 27 points for host Simi Valley in a Division I-AA game. Ryan Briggs (16 points) and Gordon Stolla (12 and nine rebounds) also scored in double figures for Simi Valley (20-5).

Lynwood 81, Hoover 64--Chad Reese had 24 points and Dave Reese added 23 for visiting Hoover (13-13) in a Division I-AA loss to top-seeded Lynwood (22-4).

Quartz Hill 37, Westminster 33--Ryan Beckstead had 13 points and Branden Higa grabbed 15 rebounds as cold-shooting Quartz Hill rallied from a three-point halftime deficit to pull out a Division I-AA win.

Alhambra 72, Glendale 62--The Dynamiters (16-12) pulled to within three with two minutes to play but could get no closer in a Division I-AA game. Hai Tran scored 23 points for Glendale.

Thousand Oaks 73, Santa Barbara 67--Andrew Borg scored 13 of his team-high 22 points in the first quarter to spark the Lancers (18-7) in a Division I-A game.

J.W. North 57, Canyon 43--Joe Ferguson had 19 points for Canyon (13-13), which fell in a Division I-A game to host North (24-2), the second-seeded team.

Crescenta Valley 70, Agoura 54--Josh Willis scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Falcons (15-10) in a Division II-AA game.

Eddie Corridori scored 22 points for visiting Agoura (15-9).

Mira Costa 67, Westlake 63--Joey Leavitt had 19 points and Brad Schwan added 18 points and nine rebounds for Westlake in a Division II-A game.

Newbury Park 67, Culver City 58--Robert Fick (16 points), Keith Smith (11), Sean McKeown (17) and Ryan Grady (10 points, 10 rebounds) led visiting Newbury Park (13-10) in a Division III-AA victory.

Moorpark 77, Serrano 55--Ryan Huisenga and Miguel Santiago each scored 23 points and Moorpark (9-15) held Serrano (11-13) to two points in the second quarter in a Division III-A game.

Nordhoff 94, Salesian 52--In a Division IV-AA game, Tim Sebek scored 27 points to lead host Nordhoff (14-10), which reached a 17-year high in total points.

St. Bonaventure 65, Santa Maria St. Joseph 64--St. Bonaventure’s Mark Romero stole the ball with 10 seconds remaining to secure the Division IV-A win at home. Jeff Wright scored 18 points and Pat Carey added 13 points and nine rebounds for St. Bonaventure (12-11).

St. Genevieve 75, Mojave 63--Edwin Morales scored a game-high 26 points, including five three-point baskets, and Ryan McGinnis added 22 to help the Valiants (9-13) upset Mojave (14-9) in a Division IV-A game.

Valley Christian 73, Village Christian 62--David Fennell had 21 points and seven steals for host Village Christian in a Division IV-A game.

Faith Baptist 93, Desert 56--Darren Wyre scored a team-high 21 points to lead second-seeded Faith Baptist (21-5) in a Division V-AA game at home.

Alex Estrada had 17 points and 10 assists for Faith Baptist.

Providence 61, Manoogian 45--Barry Dabbaghian scored 25 points to lead host Providence (13-9) in a Division V-AA game.

Capistrano Valley Christian 45, L.A. Lutheran 36--Trevor Dietrich scored 13 points to lead host L.A. Lutheran (17-5) in a Division V-AA game.

Highland Hall 74, Downey Calvary Chapel 54--Host Highland Hall built a 35-20 halftime lead in a Division V-A game. Ed Anastas (30 points, 11 rebounds, eight steals) and John Klejnot (18 points, 10 rebounds) led Highland Hall (13-6).

CITY SECTION BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Chatsworth 52, San Fernando 33--Ken Manor scored a game-high 16 points for visiting Chatsworth, which sewed up at least a share of the West Valley League championship.

Brady Mertes added 15 points for Chatsworth (16-6, 8-2), which leads Reseda by a half-game. Javier Ramos scored 13 points for San Fernando.

Reseda 83, El Camino Real 73--Marquis Burns scored 34 points and Trenton Cross added 24 for visiting Reseda (12-6, 7-2) in a West Valley League game.

Taft 85, Granada Hills 66--Senior forward Miguel Carrillo scored 23 points and was five for six from three-point range as the host Toreadors completed North Valley League play.

Casey Sheahan totaled 14 points, eight assists and five steals, and teammate Johnny Williams added 12 rebounds for Taft (17-4, 9-1).

Kennedy 83, Cleveland 55--Joe Wyatt scored a game-high 23 points to lead host Kennedy in a North Valley League game.

Bobby Winn added 20 points for the Golden Cougars (17-7, 6-4), who clinched second place. Terrayne Evans had 19 points for Cleveland (8-14, 5-5).

North Hollywood 93, Canoga Park 53--DeShawn Harvey scored 16 of his game-high 25 points in the third quarter to help the Huskies (24-1, 11-0) pull away from Canoga Park (2-20, 1-10) in a Mid-Valley League finale.

Van Nuys 66, Monroe 54--Eric Grayson scored a game-high 25 points for the Wolves (9-15, 7-4) in a Mid-Valley League game.

Poly 58, Birmingham 54 (OT)--Henry Lopez and Jaime Campos each scored four points in overtime to lead host Poly to the upset in an East Valley League finale.

Sherman Oaks CES 95, Sylmar 44--Sherman Oaks CES (12-12, 6-6) scored an East Valley League win as Khalif Muhammad had 28 points and 12 rebounds. Mitch Shenkin added 25 points.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Van Nuys 66, Monroe 48--Cicely Brewster recorded team highs in points (16) and rebounds (12) in a Mid-Valley League game for Van Nuys, which finished in a tie with North Hollywood for first place.

North Hollywood 81, Canoga Park 44--Nikki Hamilton scored 24 points to help North Hollywood clinch a share of the Mid-Valley League title. Suzi Shimoyama added 16 points and 14 assists for the Huskies (17-4, 10-1)

El Camino Real 42, Reseda 29--By beating the Regents (11-4, 7-2), El Camino Real (11-4, 7-2) created a three-way tie for the West Valley League title with Reseda and Kennedy.

Kennedy 69, Cleveland 33--Junior Shaneya Harris scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Kennedy in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Cleveland. Kennedy (14-6, 8-2) forged a share of the West Valley League title.

Sylmar 65, Sherman Oaks CES 29--Ronice Slater had a triple double for host Sylmar in the Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

St. Joseph 73, St. Bonaventure 42--Denice Babby scored a game-high 23 points for St. Bonaventure (12-11), but the Seraphs committed a season-high 34 turnovers in a Southern Section Division IV-A playoff game.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Royal 2, Beverly Hills 0--Dan Morris and Troy Burley scored for host Royal (18-2-1) in a first-round Southern Section 4-A Division match. Goalie Steve Hambly recorded shutout No. 16 for the third-seeded Highlanders.

Simi Valley 1, Peninsula 0--Mauro Ruiz scored in the 60th minute to lead host Simi Valley (16-3-4) in a 4-A playoff match.

Harvard-Westlake 2, Estancia 1--Jed Thayer scored on an assist from David Moran with less than three minutes to play to lead host Harvard (14-3-2) into the second round of the 2-A playoffs.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

La Reina 3, Paraclete 0--Alicia Moon, Jennifer Brant and Michelle Nuesca scored to help La Reina (15-2-2) beat Paraclete (12-5) in a first-round Southern Section 1-A Division match.

Oak Park 4, Righetti 0--Angelique Helvey scored two goals and Victoria Blint recorded her 14th shutout as the Eagles won a 1-A match at home.

Alemany 2, Ventura 0--Sandy Bennett and Teri Frasco scored goals to lead the Indians (19-4-2) in a 3-A match.
