SOUTHERN SECTION GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : ROUNDUP : Dana Hills Stays Close, but Falls to Lakewood in Overtime

Dana Hills extended Moore League champion Lakewood to overtime but lost, 51-46, in a Southern Section first-round Division I-AA girls’ basketball playoff game Saturday night at Lakewood High School.

With the score tied, 46-46, the Dolphins had a chance to win with 25 seconds left in regulation but couldn’t get a shot off before the buzzer. Lakewood (20-5) outscored Dana Hills, 5-0, in the overtime.

Adara Newidouski had 32 points and 13 rebounds for Dana Hills (17-9).

In other Division I-AA games:

Capistrano Valley 61, Warren 24--Angie White had 18 points to lead Capistrano Valley (25-1) past Warren (8-16) and gain its 22nd consecutive victory.

Chino 64, Santa Ana 33--Chino (23-4) outscored the Saints, 18-5, in the second quarter and, 16-4, in the fourth. Cynthia Trotter had 14 points for Santa Ana (8-13).

Lynwood 64, Fountain Valley 28--Second-seeded Lynwood (24-1) took a 17-5 lead after a quarter and had little trouble with Fountain Valley (12-15). Janet Davis led a balanced Lynwood attack with 16 points. Julie Murdent was Fountain Valley’s top scorer with seven.

In Division II-AA:

Tustin 64, Katella 41--Shari Needham had 22 points and 11 rebounds and Christine Garner 18 points and 10 rebounds for host Tustin (19-7), which plays Torrance (19-6) in the second-round Saturday.

Sarah Davis had 13 points and eight assists for Tustin. Garner broke Tustin’s single-season rebounding record with 323. She set the old record last season with 317 rebounds in 29 games. Chris Carillo had 15 points to lead Katella (10-14).

Woodbridge 59, Highland 34--Belinda Taub had a triple-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds and 10 steals to lead Woodbridge (19-7) past Highland (18-3).

In Division III-AA:

El Dorado 57, Sonora 44--Jody Caruso had 16 points, Jamie Sweet 14, and Briana Yoshina 11 for host El Dorado (18-6), which will face Santa Margarita Saturday in the second round. Chris Nonis led Sonora (10-12) with 17 points. Erin Vessey had 20 rebounds and Angie Conley six assists for El Dorado.

Estancia 52, Compton Centennial 23--Estancia forced 32 turnovers, and Leah Braatz had 15 points and 12 rebounds for host Estancia (16-9), which will play Newport Harbor Saturday. Jolena Lomax had 12 points for Centennial.

Newport Harbor 54, Bellflower 34--Kala Ross had 22 points for the Sailors (16-8).

Santa Margarita 68, Rim of the World 59--Tara Moss scored 16 points and Katie Keane 14 as Santa Margarita (17-8) erased a 36-32 deficit after two quarters and pulled away in the second half.

Santa Margarita will play El Dorado Saturday in the quarterfinals.

Kelley Moohr scored 13 points, and Leslie Nolan had 12 points and 20 rebounds for Santa Margarita. Carman Gage scored 20 points for Rim of the World (12-11).

In Division III-A:

Pacifica 76, Corona del Mar 65--Mollie Flint scored a game-high 37 points, including five three-pointers, for the Sea Kings, who finished 7-17. Ruth Agatep had 22 points for Pacifica (11-12), which travels to second-seeded Costa Mesa Wednesday. Jennifer Surface had 13 points and Vicki Peck added 12 for the Mariners.

In Division IV-A:

Agoura Oak Park 61, Whittier Christian 43--Alexis Valavanis scored 16 points for Oak Park (13-9). Monique Moreno scored 12 points to lead Whittier Christian (4-13).

In Division V-AA:

Capistrano Valley Christian 54, Brentwood 48 (OT)--Heidi Elliot had 17 points and 21 rebounds, and Mindy Martinek had 16 points as Capistrano Valley Christian (11-13) stunned Delphic League champion Brentwood (16-5).

In Division V-A:

Liberty Christian 48, Southwestern Academy 23--Jen Caruso had 18 points to lead Liberty Christian (12-10), which travels to second-seeded San Bernardino Christian (22-0) Wednesday for a second-round game. Southwestern Academy finishes 5-11.
