PREP BASEBALL 1992: GARDEN GROVE LEAGUE : Pacifica

Share

OUTLOOK

Flatten opens his second season with a Mariner team desperately short on pitching. Most of the pitchers on last year’s squad graduated, and the sole returner with any kind of experience, Way, might not play at all because a knee he injured during football season hasn’t responded to treatment, and he might have to undergo surgery. “We are kind of thin in that department,” Flatten said. With Way questionable, Main probably will become the best on the team even though he didn’t pitch last season. Flatten hopes to counterbalance the lack of pitching with speed and opportunistic hitting. All-leaguer Stevens led the team in both categories last year with a .457 batting average and 15 stolen bases. The double-play combination of all-league players Murray (.379) and Anderson (.300) also helped with the bats. The absence of Way, who batted .357 as the designated hitter last year, also would hurt Pacifica offensively. “We don’t have much power, but we have pretty good team speed,” Flatten said. DePippo will be the starting catcher.
