PREP BASEBALL 1992: GARDEN GROVE LEAGUE : Santiago

OUTLOOK

Another team with some pitching problems, the defending league champion Cavaliers will rely on position players who are unproven on the mound. But before you shed any tears for Santiago, see what Pines says about his team: “I don’t think we are going to have any weak hitters in the lineup as far as the capability to put the bat on the ball.” Definitely not with players such as Scanlan (.304 batting average and a team-high 21 runs batted in), Jung (.314 and four home runs), Estrada (.323 as the designated hitter last year) and McGarrh (.303). Though lacking in pitching depth, the Cavaliers have an outstanding one in Perez, who was 6-3 with a 2.22 earned-run average last season, and a front-line reliever in Scanlan, who was 2-1 with 10 saves. “We’ll be as good as our pitching. That’s a big factor,” Pines said.
