Reseda 78, El Camino Real 63--Trenton Cross, a sophomore point guard, scored 31 points and Marquis Burns added 19 to lead the Regents in a West Valley League makeup game.

Cross made 18 of 20 free throws for Reseda (13-6, 8-2), which will be involved in a coin toss with Chatsworth (16-6, 8-2) today to determine the league’s top-seeded playoff team.

Wilson 60, Verdugo Hills 53--Eddie Powell scored 22 points and Chan Cornish added 17 for the Dons (10-11, 4-6), but it wasn’t enough to earn a playoff spot, or to beat Wilson (6-4 in league) in a Northeast League makeup game.

VALLEY DIGEST

The City Section athletics office on Monday reshuffled the deck in the boys’ 4-A Division basketball playoffs after receiving feedback from several coaches.

When the playoffs open Wednesday, first-round pairings will remain the same, but the bracket has been changed so that Carson High won’t have to play top-seeded Westchester in the second round on Friday.

In the new bracket, the winner of Wednesday’s first-round game between Kennedy and Carson will play the winner of Washington-Banning on Friday. The winner of Taft-San Pedro will face the winner of Westchester-Granada Hills.

“They changed the rules of the game after the game started,” Taft Coach Jim Woodard said. “The City has further damaged its already weakened credibility.”

Had the bracket remained the same--and if all four league champions had won in the first round--Taft (North Valley League champion) would have faced Washington (Southern League champion) in the second round. Likewise, Carson (Pacific League champion) would have faced top-seeded Westchester (Western League champion) on Friday.

Carson initially was seeded behind Dorsey and Crenshaw, teams it had beaten in the regular season. Carson Coach Richard Masson did not attend last Thursday’s seeding meeting, however, and voiced his objections over the weekend to City athletic administrators.

The original playoff bracket came as a result of a new seeding policy. For the first time, City officials seeded the 4-A playoffs subjectively according to a team’s strength, rather than on its final placement in the league standings.

The Ventura College men’s basketball team closed the season with a 14-game winning streak and it paid off Monday when the Pirates were selected as the No. 1-seeded team in the Southern California regionals that begin Saturday.

Ventura (29-4), which has the home-court advantage throughout the regional, play host to Pasadena City (15-15) at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The top four teams in the 32-team regional will advance to the final eight of the state tournament at San Jose State on March 12-14.

Valley (27-4) is the No. 2-seeded team in the 16-team women’s regional, which begins Wednesday night.

The Lady Monarchs (27-4) will play host to L. A. Trade Tech (19-5).

The eight first-round winners in women’s competition will play in the second round Saturday.

The four winners of those games will advance to the final eight at the state championships at Merritt College in Oakland on March 5-7.
