Pitching will make the Cubs tough. Singelyn might be the best in the league. He was 6-3 last season and shared the most valuable player award with Brent Bell and Numar Garcia Parra, both of St. John Bosco. Singelyn is also one of the team’s top hitters and will bat third in the order. He is being recruited by Arizona State, USC and Minnesota. “He’s our best player, far and away,” Nicholson said. The Cubs have Ortiz back, their No. 2 pitcher, giving them a solid combination. Carroll, who was on the junior varsity last season, will get some spot starts. Loyola hit .300 as a team last season and should be good at the plate again. Fedrick, Singelyn and Vanis were all .300 hitters. “What we need to do is be more aggressive this season,” Nicholson said. “We want to put some heat on the other team, so we’ll run more this season. Hopefully, that will make things happen.” Defensively, the Cubs are strong up the middle, except at catcher where they lack experience. Eastwood and Plesh will battle for the job.
