OUTLOOK

German takes over the program after spending the past two years as the freshman football coach at Mater Dei. He played baseball for the Spartans, graduating in 1980. He also attended Fullerton College and the University of Redlands. He has his hands full, as the Spartans return only four players. “Our strength isn’t going to be much because we’re extremely young,” German said. “We have a lot of weakness, but that’s because of the age factor.” The Spartans do have a legitimate star in LeBrecht, who was an all-league selection last season. They also have two experienced pitchers in Henderson, who was 3-6 as a starter, and Fischer, who was 1-1 as a reliever. They also picked up two transfers from Mater Dei, Johnson and Donovan German, who is John German’s younger brother. “Johnson will be a big player for us,” German said. “He’s a senior and the only left-hander in the lineup. We need him to play well.” There is some talent among the new players. Bladow, who played as a freshman and sophomore, is back after sitting out a season. German is also very high on Halbert.
