COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Big Innings Seal Victory for Saddleback

Saddleback twice sent 11 batters to the plate and used the two big innings to defeat Fullerton, 17-6, in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game Tuesday at Fullerton.

The Gauchos (6-3-1, 2-0 in conference) scored five runs in the fourth and seven in the eighth and finished with 15 hits.

Robert Garcia, who had a double, a triple and three runs batted in, and Rick Brail, who had three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs, led five Saddleback players with at least two hits.

Sal Mancuso had two hits and two RBIs for Fullerton (8-4-1, 1-1). Jason Bedrosian pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing four hits and striking out three in the first victory of his career.

In other Orange Empire Conference baseball:

Rancho Santiago 9, Cypress 6--Aaron Butler hit a triple in the fifth inning and went two for four with two RBIs for Rancho Santiago (7-5, 1-1). Pitcher Mike Fontana had nine strikeouts and improved to 3-0. Greg Cole had a grand slam in the ninth inning and Robert Prince hit a home run in the fifth for Cypress (10-5, 0-2).

Riverside 13, Orange Coast 9--Scott Wulfing hit a three-run double in the eighth inning to help Riverside (8-4, 1-1) clinch its victory. Orange Coast was down by only two at the time. Paul McDaniels had four RBIs and went two for six for Orange Coast (5-2, 0-1).

In nonconference baseball:

Golden West 6, Southwestern 3--Marty Osborn hit a two-run single to break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the seventh for Golden West (6-3-1, 1-0). Teammate David Schultz hit a home run in the sixth inning. Catcher Pete Stacey went three for four, including a double, for Southwestern (7-4).

In nonconference softball:

Cypress 1, Palomar 0--Carrie Frederick singled in the game’s only run in the bottom of the seventh for the Chargers (10-3), who won their seventh consecutive game. Leigh Sager (3-2) struck out five and walked one for Cypress. Palomar is 7-2.
