WSC Honors Pugh, Langley

Sophomores Derrick Pugh of Ventura College and David Langley of College of the Canyons have been selected players of the year in the Western State Conference North and South divisions.

Pugh, a forward, averaged 7.7 points and 7.9 rebounds a game to help the Pirates (29-4) win the North Division title.

Langley, a point guard, averaged 17.2 points and 5.5 assists for Canyons (24-6), the South Division champion.

Coach of the year honors went to Philip Mathews of Ventura in the North Division, and Lee Smelser of Canyons in the South Division.

The Cal State Northridge men’s golf team will begin its spring season Monday at the Cal State Sacramento Invitational at Rancho Murrieta. The 54-hole event involves 14 teams.

Senior Mike Zambri, formerly of Westlake High, led the Matadors in the fall season with a 73.9 stroke average. His lowest round was a 69 in the Robertson Homes Collegiate tournament at Stockton Country Club.

Brad Young, a sophomore from Burbank High, had the second-lowest average in the fall, 81.0.

The Matadors play eight tournaments this spring in an attempt to qualify for the NCAA West regional May 21-23 at Tucson National golf club. Top individuals and teams at the regional advance to the NCAA championships June 3-6 in Albuquerque.

The Cal State Northridge men’s basketball awards banquet will be held March 26 at The Odyssey Restaurant in Granada Hills. A no-host social begins at 6:30 p.m., dinner is served at 7 and the awards presentation is expected to start at 7:45.
