PREP WRESTLING : Indio Stays Undefeated, Wins Title
Indio High captured the inaugural Southern Section 4-A Division dual-meet wrestling championship Thursday with a 36-14 victory over Fontana at Edison High in Huntington Beach.
Indio (18-0), ranked second in the 4-A, recorded victories in eight of 13 weight classes, including a pin by Valente Salazar 38 seconds into the 140-pound match.
Lupe Vanegas (119 pounds), Pablo Magana (130) and Matt Brockman (171) each recorded major-decision victories.
Jorge Avila of fourth-ranked Fontana (30-2) recorded a major-decision victory in the 112-pound match.
In other dual-meet finals:
Ventura 32, Torrance 18--Ventura, ranked first in the 3-A, recorded major-decision victories by John Jimenez (119), Justin Jackson (135) and Matt Jones (140) as well as a dominating performance by senior Scott Adams (189).
Adams (31-1), the Southern Section’s 189-pound champion as a junior and the division’s top-ranked competitor this season, built a 9-1 lead against Joseph Field, then recorded his 26th pin of the season 2:44 into the match.
Last week, Ventura (21-1) won the Southern Section individual team title.
Temecula Valley 33, Buena Park 21--Danny Long (130) defeated Chad Littrell, 11-1, to post one of five victories for Temecula Valley (28-1) in the 2-A final. Three matches ended in a draw.
Yucca Valley 30, Calvary Chapel 29--Heavyweight Jerry Hayes won, 6-0, over Mike Folmar in the final match to cap a come-from-behind victory by Yucca Valley (16-2) in the 1-A final.
