HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Fay’s Late Bank Shot Boosts Buena, 64-63

Lance Fay hit a running 18-foot bank shot with three seconds remaining to lift Buena High to a 64-63 victory in a Southern Section Division I-A quarterfinal Friday night at Ventura College.

Fay, who also broke Jeff Oliver’s career scoring record at Buena and has 1,611 points, finished with a game-high 22 points. He also had five assists.

Andy Saint added 21 points and 11 rebounds for Buena (23-4), which meets Mater Dei in Tuesday’s semifinals.

In other Southern Section boys’ basketball quarterfinals:

Rio Mesa 64, Woodbridge 61 (OT)--Rio Mesa (13-13) rallied from a nine-point deficit at Camarillo High in a II-AA game.

Santa Paula 75, Rancho Alamitos 62--Santa Paula’s Joey Ramirez made seven of eight free throws in the final minute to secure the victory for the Cardinals (20-5) in a III-A game at Bolsa Grande. Ramirez, who had 15 points in the first half, led all scorers with 26 points.

Pat Villa added 18 points and Charles Hyde had 12 for Santa Paula.

Rancho Alamitos forward Ed Taylor scored 20 points--including four three-point baskets--and grabbed nine rebounds.

Rancho Alamitos (15-11) led, 22-14, after one quarter, but was outscored, 20-7, in the second quarter, and trailed thereafter.

Santa Clara 52, Big Bear 48--Trailing, 16-7, after one period, top-seeded Santa Clara outscored host Big Bear, 23-9, in the second period and held on to advance to the IV-AA semifinals.

Art Barron scored eight of his 14 points in the second period for Santa Clara (23-3), and Chris Cole added six points in the quarter. Stevie Amar had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Saints, who forced 21 Big Bear turnovers, many of them in the second period.

Santa Clara will meet St. Anthony in the semifinals.

Bell-Jeff 80, Orange Lutheran 76 (2 OTs)--Bell-Jeff’s Brian Lee made two free throws with 30 seconds left in double overtime to seal the IV-A win at Orange Lutheran. Ignacio Castro scored a game-high 17 points for Bell-Jeff (21-4), which set a school-record for wins in a season.

Brian Camacho added 11 points, 18 assists and 10 rebounds.

L. A. Baptist 50, Verbum Dei 49--Matt Kilanowski made two free throws and Mark Heerema made one free throw in the final minute as the Knights (16-7) upset top-seeded Verbum Dei in a IV-A quarterfinal at Verbum Dei.

Kilanowski scored eight points and Heerema scored 18.

Faith Baptist 70, Chadwick 61 (2 OTs)--Faith Baptist (23-5) began the second overtime of the V-AA game with a decisive 6-0 run that capped a valiant comeback. The Contenders trailed, 46-34, after three periods, pulled close with an 8-0 run, then sent the game into overtime with a layup by Peter Rasmussen with three seconds left.

Each team scored six points in the first overtime. In the second overtime, Faith Baptist senior guard Alex Estrada scored six of his game-high 22 points.

Faith Baptist, which has won 14 in a row, will play Delphic League rival Brentwood in the semifinals.

Campbell Hall 93, Templeton 66--Senior Austin McKellar recorded a triple-double--24 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists--to lead Campbell Hall to a V-AA win at home. Scott Glass added 13 points and 14 rebounds.

CITY SECTION BOYS’ BASKETBALL

South Gate 53, Reseda 51--Marquis Burns missed a desperation long-range jumper at the buzzer as the Regents fell short in a second-round game of the 3-A playoffs at Reseda.

The UCLA-bound Burns finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Regents (14-7) suffered through a poor shooting effort that included a five-of-18 performance from three-point range. Jeffrey Martin (14 points) tied the score, 51-51, with a three-point shot before Venice (16-6) scored the winning field goal on a coast-to-coast layup with eight seconds left.

Trenton Cross added 13 points for Reseda, which trailed, 27-22, at the half.

CITY SECTION GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Granada Hills 66, Garfield 50--Karen Berkowitz sank eight three-point shots and scored a career-high 41 points as host Granada Hills advanced to the 3-A semifinals. Yvonne Zandi added 17 rebounds for Granada Hills (11-6), which meets Huntington Park in the semifinals.

Crenshaw 72, North Hollywood 50--North Hollywood led, 16-2, after one quarter, then was outscored, 70-34, in the 4-A quarterfinal at North Hollywood.

Cathleen Grice scored a game-high 22 points for Crenshaw (20-4) and Kimberly House scored 11 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Karma Goodman led North Hollywood (18-5) with 17 points.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Kennedy 1, Palisades 0--Alex Linares’ goal in the second overtime propelled Kennedy to a City Section quarterfinal victory.

Linares, who scored at the 107-minute mark, increased his goal streak to four games.

Francisco Reynoso, starting in goal for only the second time this season, had 20 saves.

Kennedy (8-2-4) will meet Garfield in the semifinals.

Arroyo Grande 3, Palmdale 2 (OT)-The Falcons’ season came to an end in a 2-A quarterfinal.

Cabrillo 2, Oak Park 1-The Eagles fell in a Small Schools Division quarterfinal.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Simi Valley 2, Esperanza 0--Goalie Jennifer Holman recorded her 50th career shutout as the top-seeded Pioneers (24-1-1) won a Southern Section 4-A quarterfinal match at Esperanza.

Holman, who needed only three saves to notch her school-record 22nd shutout of the season, helped set up a semifinal matchup with Mater Dei on Tuesday at a site to be determined. Mater Dei defeated Mission Viejo, 2-1, in another quarterfinal

April Herrity put Simi Valley ahead when she scored on a pass from Kathy Beasley at the 17-minute mark. Amy Hunter added the Pioneers’ second goal with 15 minutes left.

It was Simi Valley’s 15th consecutive victory.

Harvard-Westlake 2, Westridge 1 (OT)--Liz Daniels’ header off a corner kick by Alyze Lowen in the 94th minute propelled top-seeded Westlake into the 1-A semifinals. Harvard-Westlake (13-0-4) will host third-seeded Mayfield, a 5-1 winner over Oak Park, Tuesday.

Stacy Schwartz scored on an assist by Lindsay Powers to give Havard-Westlake a 1-0 lead in the first half. Westridge (12-10-1) tied the match on Amy-Beth Sirk’s goal midway through the second half.

La Canada 1, Anaheim Canyon 0--La Canada advanced to the 3-A semifinals with a shutout over Canyon. The Spartans will meet top-seeded Torrance on Tuesday.
