A 26-year-old Port Hueneme man saved an 18-month-old baby during a small fire in Camarillo, authorities said Saturday.
The fire occurred about 10:15 p.m. Friday in an apartment in the 1900 block of Colonia Place, Ventura County fire dispatcher Cece Grives said.
Erin Huntley was visiting his family when he heard a crackling noise upstairs. He rushed to the baby’s room and kicked open the door, Grives said.
A small fire started by candles had ignited one corner of the room and filled much of the room with smoke, Grives said. Huntley grabbed Dorothy Griego, who was sleeping in her crib, and got the rest of his family out of the apartment, Grives said.
He then went back inside with a pail of water and doused most of the fire, Grives said. Huntley received minor injuries to his arms and hands but refused treatment.
