SDSU Women Rebound With Easy Victory Over Texas El Paso

Two days after missing a shot at first place by one point, the San Diego State women’s basketball team rebounded with an easy 80-44 Western Athletic Conference victory Saturday over Texas El Paso at Peterson Gym.

SDSU, which lost to WAC-leading Creighton, 76-75, on Thursday, improved to 17-8, 9-3.

Kieishsha Garnes more than doubled all scorers from either team with 31 points on 13 of 21 shooting from the field. Garnes, the Aztecs’ center, also made five of five free-throw attempts and pulled down eight rebounds.

Freshmen Michelle Suman added 13 points and Falisha Wright 10 for the Aztecs. Holly Russ scored 12 for the Miners.

The University of San Diego fell behind in the first half and never caught up, losing to St. Mary’s, 61-58, in the USD Sports Center.

With the loss, USD fell to 9-16, 4-9 in the West Coast Conference. The Toreras have one game left, playing host to Santa Clara Friday. USD needs to close with a victory to tie Gonzaga for sixth place.

St. Mary’s, trying to earn the fourth spot in the WCC women’s tournament, improved to 19-7, 8-5, tied with Pepperdine going into the last game.

Jill Shaver and Debbie Gollnick scored 19 points apiece for the Toreras. Gollnick, whose scoring was a career-high, made five of five three-pointers, including the game’s last basket with nine seconds left. Fran Fabien led St. Mary’s with 20 points.

BASEBALL

University of San Diego came close to sweeping a West Coast Conference doubleheader at Loyola Marymount, but were done in by a home run in the bottom of the ninth of the second game. USD (6-7, 1-2) won the first game, 15-4, and dropped the night cap, 8-7. Loyola is 6-8, 2-1.

In the second game, Torero outfielder Tony Moeder hit a two-run homer to left with two outs in the top of the ninth to tie it, 7-7. A few moments later, however, Mike Seal ended the game with a homer to right. Kevin Herde also homered for USD.

The Toreros took the early game by getting 15 hits and six Loyola errors. Moeder was two for three with his first home run of the season and four RBIs. Teammate Larry Williams was three for five with two doubles and four RBIs.

Jeff Crane (3-0) threw all seven innings in the first game.

UC San Diego continued its best start ever with a doubleheader sweep of The Master’s College, 4-2 and 11-8. UCSD is 8-0-1; The Master’s 6-9.

In the two games for the Tritons, David Rex was five for six with a home run, five RBIs and two runs, and Ernie Isola was four for seven with three RBIs and three runs.

Ryan Flanagan struck out six in the first game to improve to 3-0. UCSD rallied from an 8-7 deficit in the night cap.

SOFTBALL

The University of San Diego swept a pair of nonconference games from Christ College Irvine, 5-0 and 9-1, at USD.

Junior Tiffany Wasilewski (3-1) pitched a four-hitter, struck out seven and retired the final 13 batters in the Toreras first victory.

Laura Cisneros and Aimee Reinard hit home runs for USD (7-1) in the second game, which was won by Hillary Savage (4-0).

UC San Diego dropped a doubleheader to Cal San Bernardino, 7-1 and 2-1. Lisa Gill was three for seven in the two games for the Tritons, who fell to 6-6.

Erin Sell hit a two-run double with one out in the bottom of the final inning to cap a four-run rally and a 7-6 Point Loma Nazarene victory over Pomona Pitzer. PLNC also won the second game, 9-5, to improve to 4-0.

Pitcher Robin Rabello (2-0) helped her own cause in the first game with a home run to begin the decisive seventh-inning. Erin Gaut (2-0) won the second game.

TRACK AND FIELD

San Diego State’s Darla Vaughn lost one record and gained another in the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships at Air Force. The SDSU women (with 37 points) finished fifth behind Brigham Young (151), Colorado State (84), Wyoming (74) and Texas El Paso (46).

Vaughn won the 200-meter dash in 23.89 seconds, breaking the meet record of 24.06 by BYU’s Cathie Guischard, who in turn broke Vaughn’s 55-meter record with a mark of 6.87.

Vaughn finished second in both the 55-meter dash (6.90) and the 55-meter hurdles (7.77).

Erica Prodznovich of SDSU was third in the 400 at 57.11, and teammate Marla Runyan was sixth in the 800 at 2:19.51. SDSU was fourth in the mile relay at 4:03.50.

MEN’S TENNIS

Unranked USD improved to 6-1 with a 5-1 victory at Arizona. Jose Luis Noriega, ranked seventh in the NCAA, defeated Matt Holt, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 1 singles. The Toreros won the top five singles matches.

Point Loma Nazarene remained undefeated at 6-0 with a 7-2 rout of Westmont in a Golden State Athletic Conference match. Enrique Guajardo of PLNC (3-0 in GSAC) defeated Jay Born, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 singles, and teammate Mattias Rendefors got by Chris Elwood, 6-2, 7-6, at No. 2.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The University of San Diego, ranked 18th, won the top four singles and top doubles matches in a 6-3 nonconference victory over No. 22 Utah.

Torera Laura Richards won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, over Lisa Salvatierra. USD’s Julie McKeon, Tuck Kacharoen and Tracy Ishii won their singles matches in straight sets. USD (4-2) plays 12th-ranked San Diego State Thursday.

Monica Clancy was the lone winner at No. 2 singles for PLNC (5-3, 2-1), which lost a GSAC match 7-1 to Westmont.

WOMEN’S DIVING

UCLA junior Kristen Walls, a former CIF champion at Monte Vista, won the Pac-10 one-meter championship with 407.5 points at the conference meet at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center in Tucson. Walls finished third in the three meter event. Her younger sister, Juli, the CIF champ at Grossmont last year, finished 12th and 15th in those events for California.
