Costa Mesa has been a league doormat for a number of years, a tradition that Green said he is determined to break as he begins his second season as coach. The team has new uniforms, a refurbished field and a new attitude. “We have to break out of the mold that we are Costa Mesa High School,” Green said. The Mustangs return only two starters, the fewest of any team in the league. Jaglowski, a shortstop, and Meyers, a utility player, should key the infield and are the team’s best hitters. Jaglowski hit .300 last season while Meyers hit .290. But Green keeps the team’s chances in league in perspective. “I’d like them to somehow finish third and get in the playoffs,” he said. Green hopes $20,000 in improvements to the school’s field--including a new backstop, three batting cages and a fence--will serve as an inspiration to his players. Green, who works at the Costa Mesa Golf Course, said booster club fund-raisers such as a baseball card show and a golf tournament, along with a $2,500 grant from the city, helped pay for the improvements. “Mark Langston came to the card show and signed autographs,” Green said. “He helped us make about $3,000 in an hour.”
