OUTLOOK

Mangram has had to replace all but two starters and all but four players from the team that finished second to Tustin last season. Because they only batted .256 as a team, the Roadrunners depended on defense and all-league pitchers Ralph Lopez and Carlos Ceballos. Although Lopez and Ceballos have graduated, Mangram believes pitching will again be a team strength. Estrella, the No. 3 pitcher last season, Zuniga and Hector Blanchet will likely see most of the action on the mound. Estrella, who is also a football and basketball standout, batted .333 last season and was a first-team all-league outfielder. Whether the Roadrunners make the playoffs for the sixth time in seven seasons might depend on how the rest of the team develops at the plate. “If the young guys play well, we could be right in there,” Mangram said. “If we don’t play well, the other teams have a lot of guys coming back, and we could be in trouble.”
