SOUTHERN SECTION GIRLS’ 4-A SOCCER : El Toro Earns Berth in Final Against Mater Dei

El Toro held Dana Hills to one shot on goal and posted a convincing 3-1 victory over the Dolphins Tuesday to advance to the Southern Section Division 4-A girls’ soccer championship match for the third consecutive season.
El Toro advances to face Mater Dei Friday at Cerritos Gahr High School.
The Chargers (24-2-2) received goals from Kelly Thomson, Sherri Kaminski and Shannon de Avila on a muddy field at Dana Hills High School.
Thomson scored 23 minutes into the match on a breakaway, beating Dana Hills goalie Stephanie Boes with a shot to the lower left corner of the net.
Diane Divino drew the Dolphins even just four minutes later, chipping a loose ball on Courtney Leonard’s free kick just over the outstretched arm of El Toro goalie Allegra Garcia.
Kaminski broke the tie six minutes into the second half with a goal on a header off Jenny Clabaugh’s free kick, and de Avila capped the scoring, trickling a shot past Boes for another goal with six minutes remaining in the match..
